🚧 Heads up, Etobicoke Creek Recreational Trail users!

Temporary trail closures and detours will be in place at Sandalwood Park while the City of Brampton , in partnership with Toronto and Region Conservation Authority , completes work to address erosion along Etobicoke Creek and help protect the recreational trail and nearby park infrastructure.

Construction is anticipated to begin in Fall 2026, with final site restoration planned for Spring 2027. Follow posted signage and detours when traveling through the area.

Another trail protection project is also planned nearby at Paul Palleschi Park, so trail users may experience construction impacts at both locations this fall.

This , we’re celebrating the impact of our partners at Ontario Streams ♻️🌱

This year, litter cleanups across seven sites covered 127,729 m² along Brampton’s local waterways. In total, crews removed an incredible 115 contractor-sized bags of garbage!

And it wasn’t just everyday litter. Cleanups uncovered larger items including shopping carts, tires, computer monitors, furniture, scooters, paint cans, camping stoves and propane tanks.

Removing waste from areas around our rivers and streams helps prevent pollution, protect natural habitats and keep our waterways healthy. 💧

You can help protect Brampton’s waterways too:

🌿 Join or organize a self-led cleanup
♻️ Reuse, recycle and dispose of waste properly
🚯 Keep litter and debris away from creeks and rivers

Salmon are on the move! 🐟🌊

Each fall, Chinook, coho and Atlantic salmon migrate from Lake Ontario into the Credit River and its tributaries to spawn. As water temperatures cool and water levels rise, these fish make their way upstream, with the migration typically peaking around early October.

Parts of are within the Credit River watershed, connecting our local creeks and streams to the larger river system and Lake Ontario.

The annual salmon migration is a great reminder that our waterways are connected, and that protecting rivers, creeks and the natural areas around them helps support healthy aquatic habitats. 🌿

If you’re exploring Brampton’s natural areas this fall, remember to observe wildlife from a respectful distance, stay on designated trails and help keep our waterways clean.

Fallen leaves may seem harmless, but where they end up matters. 🍂

When leaves are raked or blown onto the street, rain can carry them into catchbasins and local waterways. Which can clog the grate. As they break down, they can release excess nutrients that affect water quality.

Help prevent pollution this fall:
🐝 Leave some leaves in garden beds for pollinators
🍁 Collect remaining leaves for yard waste
🚯 Keep leaves off streets and away from catchbasins

What a difference a year can make! 🌿💧

At Hilldale Park North, what was once a concrete channel has been transformed into a more naturalized stream environment.

Channel restoration helps create more diverse habitat for fish, birds and insects while improving the natural function of the watercourse and creating a healthier, more resilient ecosystem. 🐟🐦

And the transformation continues!

Restoration work is now progressing at Hilldale Park South, where another section of the channel is being restored.

Those dried plants in your garden can continue supporting local wildlife long after the flowers have faded. Seed heads provide a natural food source for birds, while standing stems and plant material can provide winter habitat for insects.

Today is 🌱

Stormwater ponds can look different throughout the year. Do you know how to spot the difference between algae and blue-green algae?

Naturally occurring algae can give pond water a green or cloudy appearance and play an important role in healthy aquatic ecosystems.

Blue-green algae, also known as cyanobacteria, can form blue-green or turquoise surface films or make water look like pea soup. Some blooms can produce toxins that may be harmful to people and wildlife.

We can all help protect Brampton’s ponds and waterways by reducing pollutants and excess nutrients entering the stormwater system. Pick up pet waste, keep catchbasins clear and remember, only rain down the drain!
