Join us for a Halloween-themed Open Studio+ on Wednesday, October 28th!

The QT Artist Mixer takes over Open Studio+ in the evening with a 'Halloween Crafting Evening' during which you will customize and dress up your own sock monster. The QT Artist Mixer is a new initiative for 2SLGBTQIA+ Brampton artists, creatives, and allies to gather, network and build community in a safe and welcoming space curated by Jasmine Canaviri (she/they) and gulzar (they/them).

As always, you can bring your own works in progress, use our art supplies and materials to start a new project, take pictures in our Photography Studio, find inspiration in our Community Library, record beats in our Recording Studio and so much more.

Applications are now open for the 2027 Brampton Writer in Residence!

The residency will run for twelve weeks (February 1 - April 25) and offer both $4,500 in funding and a free, dedicated workspace at the Brampton Library, Mount Pleasant Village Branch.

The residency is open to all GTA-based professional writers who have published a minimum of one adult or young adult book-length work, fiction or non-fiction, within the last five years. We will not be considering poetry and children’s literature at this time.

A key part of the residency is community involvement. The selected writer will be expected to develop and offer two workshops to the general public and hold regular office hours to work one-on-one with emerging local writers. A commitment of 120 hours to these activities is expected over the twelve weeks.

Today is the first day of Advance Voting in the 2026 City of Brampton municipal election.

We suggest you create an action plan to vote:

1. Make sure you can vote by checking the Voter's List.

2. Confirm your ward and voting location.

3. Save your voter notice (if you received one in the mail) and prepare the acceptable identification needed to show your name and address.

4. Vote in Advance on October 9, 10, 11, 16, 17 2026.

5. Vote by Proxy if you are unable to vote in-person during advance voting or on Voting Day. The deadline to certify an Appointment for Voting Proxy is Monday, October 26, 2026 at 4:30 p.m.

6. Vote from Home if you are homebound due to illness, injury or disability. The deadline to request a home voting appointment is by 4:30 p.m. on October 9, 2026.

7. If you are experiencing homelessness, you can go to the City Clerk's Office at City Hall during business hours and complete an Affidavit of Residence and an Application to Amend the Voters' List.

8. Vote on Monday, October 26 from 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.

Go to brampton.ca/votes to confirm that you can vote, voting locations and hours, who your candidates are and what acceptable identification you need to bring.

The City of Brampton’s municipal election on Monday, October 26th is an opportunity to ensure that arts and culture receives the support and recognition it needs to flourish and build the Brampton we all want.

BAO is proposing the following practical and achievable steps to strengthen Brampton’s economy, improve quality of life for all residents and ensure the city’s growth is both responsive and sustainable as we ready for a new term of council and refresh of the city’s culture plan.

We call on all candidates to publicly recognize arts and culture as a strategic priority by taking the following actions:

1. Increase stable and predictable investment in arts and culture.
2. Expand affordable creative spaces across Brampton.
3. Embed arts and culture into municipal planning and city-building.
4. Recognize the creative industries as a major economic driver.

Today is National Day for Truth and Reconciliation and Orange Shirt Day.

To mark the occasion, BAO staff unanimously chose to work so that, in partnership with imagineNATIVE's 2026 Tour Program, we could screen the documentary “What We Carry” today. We felt that it is our duty as settlers not only to reflect but to help fellow settlers learn with us.

"What We Carry," directed by Jessie Anthony (Onondaga), is a documentary feature that provides a fresh perspective on reconciliation between Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples. The film examines many challenging but much-needed questions around privilege, accountability, and healing.

As settlers on Turtle Island, we are guests here. We have a responsibility to educate ourselves on the history and cultures of the Indigenous peoples of the land we now call home. We should do this not only today but every day.

Understanding and reflecting on the history of the settler state called Canada and the Indigenous peoples who long predate its establishment are important and necessary steps toward achieving the twin goals of truth and reconciliation.

Reconciliation is an ongoing responsibility. Meaningful change begins with each of us.

You can start by attending today's film screening at 6:00 p.m. at BAO and by going to the National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation website nctr.ca. Read the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s 94 Calls to Action and commit to making them happen.

Meet Maura Broadhurst of the Ontario Arts Council - Conseil des arts de l'Ontario and Raeburn Ferguson of City of Brampton – Your Local Government at our Meet the Arts & Culture Funders this Saturday, October 3rd.

Maura manages the multidisciplinary programs that support the operations of arts organizations as well as programs that fund audience development and professional development projects by individual artists for the Ontario Arts Council.

Raeburn manages the Advance Brampton Fund for the City of Brampton and has experience in grant administration, strategic planning, cultural programming, project management, and stakeholder engagement.

This is a great opportunity to meet the people behind the grant decisions and discuss your activity or project ideas with them. You’ll learn about their funding priorities as well as grant processes.

This event is suitable for both individual artists and creatives, as well as registered charities, community groups, arts, culture & heritage organizations, community-led charities and not-for-profits working in the arts and culture sector in Brampton.
