Our Volunteer Appreciation Event was a chance to celebrate the incredible people who make our work possible. ๐Ÿ’œ

This year, 113 volunteers contributed an amazing 12,345 hours of service, the equivalent of six full-time staff members.

A huge congratulations to all of our award recipients on this well-deserved recognition, and thank you to every volunteer for the care, dedication, and kindness you bring to our organization. We appreciate you more than words can say.

Happy Pride Month and National Indigenous History Month!

Itโ€™s a time to celebrate joy, identity, culture, and community, while also acknowledging the ongoing impacts of colonialism, systemic discrimination, and the histories that continue to shape the experiences of many people today.

We also recognize that gender-based violence disproportionately impacts both Indigenous and 2SLGBTQIA+ communities. Creating safer communities means addressing the systems that allow violence, discrimination, and inequity to persist.

We celebrate, we learn, and we continue the work of building safer communities for all. ๐ŸŒˆ๐Ÿ’œ

Homelessness and gender-based violence are deeply interconnected. For many women and gender-diverse people, experiences of violence can lead to housing instability, unsafe living conditions, and homelessness.

Adequate housing is more than shelter. It is foundational to health, safety, healing, and dignity.

This Sexual Assault Prevention Month, we must recognize that preventing and responding to GBV also means advocating for safe, accessible, and affordable housing for survivors.

May 17 was chosen to commemorate the historic decision made by the World Health Organization (WHO) in 1990 to declassify homosexuality as a mental disorder.

While this marked an important step forward, 2SLGBTQ+ communities continue to face significant marginalization and inequities. In Canada, by age 15, over 59% of LGB+ people have experienced physical or sexual assault, compared to 37% of heterosexual youth.

This day is a reminder that recognition must be matched with real change so that 2SLGBTQ+ people can live with safety, dignity, and belonging, not just in principle, but in everyday life.
