Uturn

Uturn Home for every young person facing homelessness. A ministry of Westman Youth for Christ. Uturn provides that place.

Young people facing homelessness need a safe place to call home before they can move forward towards independence. Through financial and community partners like you, our dedicated team of staff and volunteers build solid lasting relationships, teach lifeskills, establish safety, all with the goal of surrounding each youth with the support and community they need to build a home and life they can be proud of.

It's that time of year again! We are looking to raise $50 for each youth in the uturn program. Our goal is to provide them with a Christmas gift and meal as many of our youth do not have family to celebrate with and spend the holidays alone. Please join us in helping spead the Christmas spirit through investing in Uturn!

It's that time of year! We're collecting $50 donations to ensure the youth in our program have a Christmas gift. Many of them will not have healthy family to spend the holidays with and certainly will not be getting presents. Our party is next week, so we are also accepting baking donations! Spread the word. Thanks, friends!

To donate, please call the office at 204-727-1251 or donate online at www.wyfc.ca/invest and write 'uturn xmas' in the message.

Moving in +30 weather calls for ice cream!
Securing housing is one hurdle, another is finding a way to get your stuff there (and out again down the road). When youth are involved with Uturn, they enter into community and a support network that not only helps with moving couches but makes time to celebrate how significant the change of address is.

Another graduate! Pearl is another one of the five Uturn residents who graduated this June. Pearl not only got her diploma, she also won an award, and read one of her original poems to the crowded room. Your support of Uturn's work ensures youth have a caring group of people cheering them on, even when they do not think they can make it to the finish line. Pearl is so proud of this moment and we are too.

Last week was a big one for some of our residents! J.P. is one of five youth at Uturn who graduated from high school last week, overcoming many obstacles to get there. We are so proud of J.P.'s hard work, quiet determination, and ability to chip away at each of his goals. We were so excited to cheer for him last week, and will continue to walk alongside him as he moves on to what is next.

Yesterday was National Indigenous Peoples Day and some staff and youth took in the food & music at the Riverbank Discovery Centre. Connecting each youth who comes through our doors to their culture is a priority, and a part of each youth-led personal development plan. Some youth simply want to be 'Canadian' and others know exactly where their ancestors came from, and want to connect with their heritage. Wherever home is, youth connected with our programming are supported to reconnect with their past in order to inform their future.

Three residents of Uturn recently began a job skills readiness program at Assiniboine Community College. The program included 4 weeks in class, earning certificates (CPR/Food Handling/etc) and a 7 week work placement (leading to potential job offers). Of the 15+ young adults who began the program, only 6 made it to the end and 3 of the 6 were Uturn participants. This is the impact of healthy community, of having people cheering for you, and someone checking in to see if you are meeting your own expectations. Youth living at Uturn get to not only dream of the lives they want, but have the encouragement and accountability to make it happen. Way to go, guys!!
