*MILD SPOILERS AHEAD!*

I enjoyed The Bewitching by Silvia Moreno-Garcia! It took me a while to figure out who was who in each chapter, but once I got that, I was all good.

This felt like the perfect, witchy Halloween season read. There’s a mystery, taking place in three different times (1908, 1934, 1998), and I loved how those three stories came together over the course of the book. The last quarter or so was so intense, I couldn’t stop reading because I just had to know what was happening!

I thought the POV choices were really interesting: 1908 is from the POV of Alba, who is actively being bewitched; 1998 POV is from Minerva, who is actively being bewitched; 1934 POV is from Beatrice, who is watching it happen to one of her best friends. I think that having that one outside POV really made the whole thing feel more believable.

I also love the way Moreno-Garcia uses class in the story. Like, is it a witch or just an entitled rich person? As well as showing how exploitation of marginalized people plays into it, in each different era.

A really good read, as I’ve come to expect from this author!

Here are our Five Reasons to Read: Mi'kmaw Moons (the board book) by Loretta Gould!

1. This is a great board book that goes through the calendar year and gives the Mi'kmaq names for each full moon

2. This is super accessible for little kids, as well as older ones

3. Loretta Gould's illustrations are great!

4. Each page shows the moon's name in English, Mi'kmaq, and phonetically

5. This is a wonderful introduction to the Mi'kmaw way of seeing nature and the moon names make so much sense!

Our Cut of Salt by Deena Helm was such a great read! Horror in the creeping dread type of way, that I am always here for.

I loved how this story brought together three generations of Palestinian women and it was through their love and relationships that they were able to get through the horrors. The horrors of violent occupation (okay, they didn't get through this, as it's ongoing, but how they were able to help each other survive it), the horrors of a haunted house that was stolen from a family, the horrors of a world that refuses to see you as human. I read this immediately after reading The Palestine Primer by Rashid Khalidi, which, I think, added another layer to the story for me. I obviously know about the Nakba, but there were other treaties and agreements that were mentioned throughout this book, that I had just learned more about, so was able to really understand what they were talking about, and the implications of those references.

I also loved how water and salt played such important roles in the story, just as they do in Palestine.

I thought that the ending was really great, if unlikely. It's exactly what you would want to see at the end of a story like this. Very satisfying.

We are kicking off Mi'kmaw History Month with our Five Reasons to Read: The Birthing Tree by Amanda Peters!

1. This is a wonderful, multi-generational story about family and community

2. The story takes place over quite a number of years, following Aliet, who was born under the birthing tree

3. There is a great combining of traditional knowledge and modern medicine

4. There is an easter egg for readers who have read Peters' other books

5. While Aliet navigates love and loss throughout the book, overall, it has a strong sense of hopefulness
