We continue our spotlight series on the team behind the scenes designing the sensors you trust with Melissa Barry, our head of Human Resources! Here’s what she has to say about her journey to joining the Pro-Oceanus team:

“I joined Pro-Oceanus on a part-time basis, to provide administrative support to the owner. I have been following the company’s growth and journey for close to 15 years, which has given me a strong appreciation for the industry and the work the company does. Although my professional background has primarily been in healthcare, I bring over 20 years of experience working in clinical, administration, and management roles. Prior to such, I held a role with a financial institution supported by both a Science and a Business degree.

A fun fact about me is the first job I ever had was working at a Bingo Hall. We got paid a bag of chips, a bottle of pop and 10$. The best piece of advice I was ever given was “Be Adaptable”; careers and opportunities can change over time, and being open to change has led me to experiences I never excepted.”

Nature always finds a way…

Biofouling is one of the biggest challenges in long-term ocean monitoring. No matter how advanced the tech, once you’re in the water, you’re part of the ecosystem. Whether you like it or not.

We put a lot of thought into minimizing fouling and keeping our sensors performing in tough environments… but sometimes, the ocean has other plans 😅

Knowledge is the first step toward action.

When it comes to our oceans, understanding what’s happening beneath the surface is essential. Monitoring parameters like CO2 gives us the insight needed to track change, support research, and make informed decisions.

Better data leads to better outcomes; for science, industry, and the health of our planet.

Some days, fieldwork looks a little different and we’re not complaining.

Out on the water with the Blue Boat and our CO₂-Pro CV, collecting real-time data while drifting through calm conditions. Canoes, quiet paddling, and a steady stream of measurements. This is what long-term monitoring can look like.

It’s a gentle reminder that great data doesn’t always come from big vessels and rough seas. Sometimes it’s about slowing down, working with the environment, and letting the sensor do its job.

Science, but make it peaceful.

The 2026 ASLO-SIL Joint Meeting in Montreal, Quebec is just two weeks away! Our application scientist, Jess, will be in the exhibition hall all week at booth 107. Come say hi, ask questions, and learn about dissolved gas sensors.

Excited to connect with everyone that will be in attendance — see you there!

Today we celebrate Earth Day! Every year since it was first organized in 1970, the world has come together on this day, April 22, to bring attention to environmental issues. What started with 20 million Americans protesting environmental damage has grown into an international movement of over 190 countries.

This year, the theme for Earth Day is “Our Power, Our Planet”, meaning that “environmental progress doesn’t depend on any single administration or election”, but is rather held up by the everyday actions of local communities and individuals.

At Pro-Oceanus, we’re dedicated to this theme through the continued advancement of ocean monitoring technology to help us protect our shared planet. From the largest ocean projects to local watershed monitoring, we’re here to help you with your dissolved gas measurements.

This month our spotlight series on the team behind the scenes designing the sensors you trust is Sandra Simpson, our Financial Controller! Here’s what she has to say about her journey to joining the Pro-Oceanus team:

“When I was growing up, my parents thought that I should be a secretary because that was what you did back then. So, I took 1 year Stenography at NSCC and entered the job field as a receptionist, followed by various other jobs as Admin Assistant, Executive Assistant, etc. I was managing staff and learning a lot of computer programs including AccPac., the accounting software of that time. After realizing I was a key employee at a forest industry consulting company in Vancouver, and if I wanted to earn a decent living, I needed to get an accounting designation. That began a 10-year journey of taking courses to work towards my accounting designation while also working fulltime and dealing with a family. I successfully completed my studies in 2000.

I first started as a contractor with Pro-Oceanus to get the Office Manager set up to work remotely from home. Management was very open to improving their accounting systems and processes, and I found the whole industry very interesting from the environmental aspect of it. I don’t really have one favourite memory, but I always feel appreciated for the job I perform. All staff are very positive and there have been lots of fun company events over the last five years.

I believe most staff know that I’m a bit of a “Hosta-holic” in my free time and have 160 different varieties and about 200 hostas plants in total with many other companion plants. There are over 7,000 registered hosta cultivars, so just a drop in the bucket compared to other collectors. I enjoy the creativity of gardening and being outside. It’s also a good workout!

The best advice I’ve ever received is “do what makes YOU happy and don’t listen to anyone else”! I never wanted to work for a big accounting firm or a large corporation, and all my positions over the last 45+ years have been in small to medium sized companies where I’ve always worn many hats and knew the operations from the ground up.”

Total Dissolved Gas Pressure (TDGP) is a measurement of the sum of all dissolved gases (nitrogen, oxygen, carbon dioxide, etc.) in a parcel of water and is ideally in equilibrium with barometric pressure. It is an important, but sometimes overlooked, water quality parameter for monitoring fish health in an aquarium setting.

Gas bubble disease (GBD) occurs when the waters become supersaturated with gas (above 100-105% saturation) and leads to the development of bubbles in the fish’s blood stream. This can lead to a loss of balance, damage to the internal organs, and even death if not resolved quickly. GBD is easy to prevent with continuous in situ monitoring using Pro-Oceanus' TDGP sensors.
