Our Story

The United Way of Lunenburg County exists to support essential programs and organizations in Lunenburg County. We raise funds by soliciting donations in workplaces from individuals and their corporate employers. The funds are allocated to community programs in response to applications from registered charities on an annual basis. We also offer donor choice where donations can be directed to specific registered charities. The United Way is governed by a local Board of volunteers. The annual process of awarding funds to programs is under the supervision of a Citizens Allocation Committee. The United Way benefits from the efforts of countless volunteers as well as donations in kind from many businesses, with the result that our cost of operating is extremely low, ensuring donations create the maximum positive results.

The United Way of Lunenburg County in partnership with our many community partners also operates a number of low cost programs that help to increase recreational and social opportunities for our lower income residents. These programs include;

3,000 FREE swim/skate passes to the LCLC every year. Passes are distributed through the local schools, Schools Plus, Freeman House, Harbour House, Souls Harbour, Home Support, Better Together Family Resource Centre, Family Support Centre and Big Brothers Big Sisters.

FREE Skates to Borrow at the LCLC. A storage united filled with a variety of skates is available to anyone who needs skates. Simply Borrow, skate, clean and return. This program compliments the program above.

FREE Quality Used Sports Equipment. We collect gently used sports equipment, our expert volunteers choose only the best and we make it available to anyone who needs it. We host a used hockey equipment exchange at the LCLC in August and have a year round table of soccer equipment at the HB Studios Sports Centre.

Bikes for Kids takes gently used bikes in the fall, refurbishes them over the winter and in the spring gives them to kids, youth and parents who want a bike but struggle financially. Since 2013 over 450 bikes have been given away.

Coats for Kids - Teens and Adults too takes gently used warm winter coats and makes them available to folks who need one. In 2018 over 850 warm winter coats were distributed.

FREE iPhones and Laptop Computers. We collect used smartphones and laptops and provide them to marginalized people in our community. There are many marginalized and vulnerable people that due to poverty or unique circumstances are unable to participate in a world connected via the internet and therefore benefit from all the opportunities, information and support that this world could provide. We believe that a smartphone can be a valuable tool that could enable people to reach out for the help, support and the resources they need to succeed. These people could be women fleeing family violence, people with mental health issues, at risk youth, people looking for jobs or people that don’t have access to the internet because of their current home location or because they don’t have a permanent home. We always encourage people to take advantage of the growing number of FREE WI-FI hotspots in the area. Since May of 2017 we have distributed 58 iPhones and 17 laptops.

FREE iPhones are used for personalized music programs (music streaming services) for elders living in nursing homes and who are suffering from Dementia, Alzheimer’s and other affects of ageism. 30 IPhones distributed to 3 TOB Nursing homes + Mahone Bay, New Germany and Chester.

FREE Recreational Passes for up to 100 low income individuals with mental health issues. Passes include access to the YMCA, The LCLC for swimming, skating and yoga and the HB Studios Field House. We also included $500 in gift cards from SportChek.
