Today was another beautiful day on the water. It was also a great opportunity for Brighton Marine Rescue to cross train with one of 424 Tiger squadron’s Hercules aircraft and SAR Tech’s.

Dropping flares to gauge the wind, the Hercules then dropped two SAR Tech’s with parachutes who made a perfect landing close to the boat. After retrieving the parachutes, the SAR Tech’s remained in the water to act as people in distress for the Hercules to drop two SRK’s (Sea Rescue Kits). Once the SRK’s were dropped, Brighton Rescue picked up the SAR Tech’s and SRK’s.

Lastly, Brighton Rescue acted as a vessel in distress for the Hercules to drop a training barrel, which in an emergency, would contain a de-watering pump. Retrieving the training barrel, we transported everyone safely back to the dock.

The 424 Tiger Squadron is a fantastic rescue team, and we always appreciate the opportunity to cross train with them.

VOLUNTEERS SAVING LIVES ON THE WATER!

Did you know that Brighton Marine Rescue (BMR) is a registered federal charity and provincial not-for-profit organization dedicated to Saving Lives on the Water!

We are based out of the Bay Street Municipal Marina in Gosport and have been providing Search and Rescue services at no cost to anyone who requires assistance.
Our crew is entirely staffed by local volunteers to provide services 24/7 throughout the boating season.
Working with the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre and allied agencies including the Brighton Fire Department, 424 Squadron, OPP, QSAR, Cobourg Coast Guard and Wellington Auxiliary Coast Guard, we provide on-the-water coverage to the offshore areas of the Municipality of Brighton, Township of Cramahe and portions of both the Municipality of Quinte West and Prince Edward County.

In total, we provide search and rescue services covering over 1500 square kilometres including Lake Ontario from Colborne to the Murray Canal to the US border, Weller’s Bay and Presqu’ile Bay.

Today was the last day of the 424 TIGEREX SAR multi- agency training exercise.

In a similar role to yesterday, Brighton Rescue transported 11 SAR Techs and their life rafts to the drop off location, 3nm southeast of Presqu’ile Point in Lake Ontario. The same as yesterday, Brighton Rescue took on the role of a sinking ship, acting as a target for the Hercules aircraft who dropped two Sea Rescue Kit’s (SRK’s) nearby.

The life rafts were put in the water next and we dropped off the 11SAR Techs who swam to the rafts, acting as crew members needing rescue. Making another pass, the Hercules dropped off two SAR Tech parachutists who were part of the rescue team. Shortly after, a 424 Griffin Helicopter arrived and begin hoisting up “survivors” from the life rafts.

As part of today’s exercise, a Paramedic boat picked up a few of the survivors while the Griffin hoisted up the remainder. Once the rescue was complete, Brighton Rescue moved in to retrieve the abandoned life rafts.

This was the last day of the exercises that Brighton Rescue was to participate in.

We would like to extend our deepest thanks to the TIGEREX event organizers for allowing Brighton Rescue to participate in this amazing exercise and hope that we will be called upon to do so again in future!

We would also like to express our deepest respect, and appreciation for all of the SAR teams (land, air, and marine) who are always there when we need them the most.

Once again, it was Brighton Rescue’s privilege to be able to participate in the 424 TIGERX SAR multi- agency training event today.

In this exercise, Brighton Rescue transported 10 SAR Techs and their life rafts to the drop off location, 3nm southeast of Presqu’ile Point in Lake Ontario. Once on-scene, Brighton Rescue took on the role of a sinking ship, acting as a target for the Hercules aircraft who dropped two Sea Rescue Kit’s (SRK’s) nearby.

In the next phase of the exercise, Brighton Rescue placed the life rafts in the water and dropped off 9 of the 10 SAR Techs who swam to the rafts, acting as crew members needing rescue. Making another pass, the Hercules dropped off two SAR Tech parachutists who were part of the rescue team. Shortly after, a 424 Griffin Helicopter arrived and begin hoisting up “survivors” from the life rafts.

As the helicopter was only able to take 5 of the 9 “survivors”, when it returned to base, Brighton Rescue moved in to rescue the remaining 4 “survivors” and to retrieve their life rafts.

This was another great training exercise, and we were delighted to have the opportunity to participate.
