MFN hosted the Indigenous Environmental Science students from the University of Guelph last week. We had a turtally awesome time, learning husbandry techniques and plant identification skills. Together we released hatchling turtles, did trail camera checks but highlight of the trip was adventuring to the old settlement with Elder Richard Noganosh.

On Thursday, August 20th, Magnetawan First Nation hosted the Opening Ceremony and Ribbon Cutting to launch the Britt Area Maintenance Contract awarded to Shwe Miikaan Miller by the Ontario Ministry of Transportation (MTO).

Shwe Miikaan Miller is a First-Nations-owned and operated company; a partnership between three First Nations - Henvey Inlet, Magnetawan and Shawanaga - and Miller Paving.

It was a “historic” day, said Chief William Lloyd Noganosh.

The $43-million contract covers a seven-year period during which Shwe Miikaan will provide year-round maintenance on Highways 69, 522, 529 and 529A. This contract will create 15 jobs.

Among the guests attending the celebration were the Hon. George Pirie (Minister of Northern Economic Development and Growth), Chief Adam Pawis (Shawanaga First Nation) and Ryan Essex (President, The Miller Group).

Chi-Miigwech to Elder Joe Noganosh and the Women’s Drum Group of Magnetawan First Nation, as well as our Master of Ceremonies Phil Goulais (Nipissing First Nation) for guiding us through the day in a good way.
