If you’re looking for a great place to have a picnic on your own or with family and friends and perhaps take a canoe or kayak out into the water for a spin in the Brockville area, the Mac Johnson Wildlife Area is an excellent option!

Picnic tables, a large picnic shelter and handicapped washrooms are available on the north side of the reservoir. A small picnic area is also located on Centennial Road near the Broome-Runciman Dam.

A Natural Gem Minutes from Downtown Brockville!

Also known locally as the Back Pond, the Mac Johnson Wildlife Area was renamed by the Cataraqui Region Conservation Authority (now Cataraqui Conservation) in 1987, to recognize the efforts and achievements of a Brockville resident and early Conservation Authority member Mac Johnson.

For those who enjoy a refreshing and edifying nature walk, or a more stringent and challenging hike, there are a total of 11 kilometres of trails on the property, offering a chance to experience the wildlife and vegetation of woodlands, wetlands and fields.

As the owner of the Cataraqui Trail, Cataraqui Conservation welcomes area residents and visitors alike to come on out for a stroll, a hike, a run, a bike ride or even a horseback ride any time of year.

We just have a few guidelines to ensure the safety and enjoyment of all 104 kilometres of trail for everyone:

• Respect the privacy of people living beside the trail.
• Hunting on trail property is prohibited.
• Respect and obey all trail signs.
• Keep dogs on a leash at all times.
• Don’t litter, and please clean up after pets and horses.
• Take nothing but photographs.
• Leave plants and flowers for others to enjoy.
• Protect and do not disturb wildlife.
• Because people use the trail both on foot and on wheels, alert slower-moving users to your presence, slow down, and proceed with caution as you pass them (generally on the left).
