We have some very exciting things happening this week, but we are most excited to be hosting our first big event in our new building. This is an event exclusively for our students, and unfortunately is not open to members of the public.
We are very excited to announce that we will be hosting a very special guest speaker for ALL of our BJHS students, as well as some of the Grade 9s throughout Brooks & the County of Newell, on Tuesday October 20th.
This event is a special resiliency presentation, featuring Tyler Smith. Tyler is a survivor of the 2018 Humboldt Broncos bus crash, mental health advocate, entrepreneur, public peaker, and winner of The Amazing Race Canada - Season 9. His journey through tremendous hardship, healing, and resilience has given him a powerful perspective on connection, vulnerability, mental health, and using difficult experiences as a source of strength and purpose. Opportunities to hear directly from someone with Tyler's lived experience are rare, and we are very excited to be able to offer our students this opportunity. We believe this is an experience that can leave a lasting impression on young people and provide them with tools they can draw on when facing challenges of their own.
Tyler's presentation will encourage students to explore:
- What resilience looks like when life becomes difficult
- Using hardship as an opportunity for growth
- The importance of connection, healthy relationships, and trusted adults
- Recognizing when we need support and knowing who we can turn to
- Understanding that vulnerability is not a weakness
- Having the courage to speak openly when we are struggling
- Practical strategies for navigating challenges and building resilience
This event is part of our community's Resiliency Campaign, which our committee has supported for more than 20 years.
