We were honoured to attend the barn grand opening of Rolling Hills School Agricultural Academy's yesterday! 🐄

We are incredibly proud to be part of this amazing initiative, which helps educate students about the importance of agriculture and the vital role it plays in our everyday lives.

A huge thank you to the school, students, and dedicated volunteers whose hard work and commitment brought this project to life. Your efforts are helping inspire the next generation and build a stronger connection to agriculture! 👏

Amazing example from our District.

Congrats, Garnet!

Chances are you’ve eaten beef that has passed through a plant Garnet Altwasser built.

Our province boasts more than 70% of Canada’s cattle slaughter capacity. Those impressive numbers were built by people with vision and determination. Let’s meet one of them.

Garnet Altwasser and his wife Faye moved to Brooks in 1966 and opened a feed and supply store. That small business grew into Lakeside Farm Industries, and Altwasser ran it as president and CEO for the next thirty years.

Under his leadership, it grew into the largest single-site cattle feeding operation in Canada.

Altwasser wasn’t all business though. In 2004, when the BSE crisis was at its worst, he put $1 million into a recreation centre for Brooks.

Altwasser was inducted into the Alberta Agriculture Hall of Fame in 2018 and the Canadian Agricultural Hall of Fame in 2023.

Since 1951, 144 Albertans have made it into the Hall of Fame because somebody took the time to nominate them. If someone like Altwasser comes to your mind, do the same for them.

Friday was our annual End of Water Season BBQ to celebrate another season of irrigation and recognize the hard work that keeps the Eastern Irrigation District running. 💧

The BBQ included presentations from our new General Manager, Gary Krushell, and EID Board Member, John Ketchmark, who shared remarks with our team as we wrap up the season.

A big thank you to our field crews and office staff for their dedication, hard work, and commitment throughout the water season.

With the water season winding down, we're shifting gears to what's next: construction season!

A reminder to everyone accessing EID lands and reservoirs: Access is a privilege, not a right.

Public access is generally permitted on most EID-owned lands designated as community pastures. However, these are private lands, and the EID reserves the right to close all or part of its lands to public access at any time.

Illegal dumping and the improper disposal of waste are unacceptable and impact our land, water, wildlife, and the people who rely on these resources.

Please respect EID lands by packing out what you bring in and disposing of all waste at appropriate facilities.

Failure to follow EID access guidelines may result in loss of access to EID lands and reservoirs.

🚯 Illegal dumping affects all of us. Waste left in ditches, fields or on public land can harm wildlife, water quality, and public safety, leaving farmers, landowners and taxpayers paying for cleanup.

The Government of Alberta is proposing stronger penalties for illegal dumping. If approved by the legislature, fines would range from:
▪️ $10,000 to $100,000 for individuals
▪️ $100,000 to $1 million for corporations

Courts would also be able to impose jail sentences in certain circumstances.

📞 On municipal land: contact the local municipality.
📞 On public or Crown land: call 310-LAND (5263).

Include the location and photos or videos if you can safely collect them.

Please use appropriate landfills, recycling depots, and hazardous waste disposal options. Responsible disposal helps protect the rural spaces we share.
