A question I get all the time is, “Why do I keep burning my tote bags or melting my vinyl?” 😅

If that’s happening to you, here are my best tips!

🎀 1. Lower your heat.
If your tote bag is burning, your temperature is likely too high. You don’t need a large heat press either! An iron, Cricut EasyPress, or EasyPress Mini all work great because you can control the temperature. I rarely go above 360°F for burlap tote bags.

🎀 2. Preheat the tote bag.
Give the fabric a quick press for a few seconds before applying your vinyl. This removes moisture and helps the HTV adhere much better. Lint roll it as well!

🎀 3. Always use a heat protection sheet.
Place a Teflon sheet or parchment/heat protection sheet between your heat source and the vinyl. This helps protect both the vinyl and the tote bag from scorching.

🎀 4. Protect the inside of the bag.
Most burlap totes have a plastic liner inside. If you don’t add a barrier, you can accidentally melt it. I always place a heat pad, or even a piece of cardboard inside the bag before pressing.

🎀 5. Don’t over-press.
HTV doesn’t need a minute of heat! It needs the right temperature, firm pressure, and the correct amount of time. If you can see the texture of the tote bag coming through the vinyl, that’s usually a great sign you’ve achieved a good press.

🎀 6. Burnish before peeling.
Before removing the carrier sheet, grab a squeegee and gently rub over the design one last time. It helps ensure every part of the vinyl is fully adhered.

🎀 7. Know if your HTV is a hot peel or a cold peel.
Some vinyl should be peeled immediately, while others need to cool first. Always check the manufacturer’s instructions before peeling.
