June is Filipino Heritage Month in Canada. It is an opportunity for us to acknowledge and celebrate the immense and valuable contributions that Filipinos in Canada have made to all aspects of Canadian life.

As a health care union, we also proudly recognize that thousands of HEU members are Filipino or are of Filipino descent, and that they are an active part of our labour movement.

June is National Indigenous History Month, a time to recognize Indigenous peoples who have lived on this land since time immemorial and whose presence continues to contribute to our evolving society. This is also a time to honour and uphold the rich achievements, heritage, cultures, traditions, resilience, diversity, and rights of First Nations, Inuit and Métis Peoples across Canada.

It's also a time to reconfirm our commitment to truth, reconciliation and the 94 calls to action from the Truth and Reconciliation Commission along with the 231 calls to justice outlined in the National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls.

As outlined in our strategic plan, we are committed to continuing with the necessary work towards truth and reconciliation within our union and our communities.

HEU acknowledges with gratitude that our members work on the traditional, ancestral, and unceded territory of First Nations who have cared for and nurtured these lands from time immemorial.

HEU acknowledges the inherent rights of First Nations. We also acknowledge the pervasive and ongoing harms of colonialism faced by Indigenous Peoples, including forced removal and dispossession of the land. These harms also include the widespread systemic racism against Indigenous peoples as users, patients, and staff in B.C.’s healthcare system. We are committed to confronting and healing the systemic racism underlying this system in our provision of healthcare services.

On Injured Workers Day, we reflect on the gains made through collective action to demand that the concerns of injured workers are heard and that governments respond with action. Each year, injured workers and their family, friends and the labour movement mark Injured Workers' Day by calling for improvements to workers' compensation programs.

Many HEU members return to their work after an injury with ongoing chronic pain and little treatment or compensation, and many more are unable to return to their HEU jobs due to the impact of chronic pain.

Advocates have been calling for changes to the system for treating and compensating chronic pain for over a decade. This year the BC Federation of Labour's focus on Injured Workers' Day is on chronic pain after a workplace injury. Sign this petition for improved treatment and compensations for workers left with chronic pain after a workplace injury: https://actionnetwork.org/forms/injuredworkersdeservebetter

Throughout June, BC Federation of Labour will also be holding webinars about chronic pain. Learn more about these webinars here: https://bcfed.ca/injured-workers-day-june-1-2026-chronic-pain

Happy Pride Month!

Pride Month is a month-long celebration that recognizes the 2SLGBTQIA+ community and their contributions to society. It is a time to acknowledge the challenges faced by this community and to stand in solidarity with their fight for equality, acceptance, and human rights. Pride Month is a joyful and colorful display of love, unity, and resilience, with events and activities that promote inclusivity, educate the public, and celebrate the diversity of sexual orientations and gender identities.

Pride Month has its roots in the Stonewall uprising in New York City in June 1969. The uprising was sparked by a series of protests against police harassment and discrimination. The following year, the first Pride marches were organized to commemorate the anniversary of the uprising.

We acknowledge the continued challenge faced by this community and we unite in solidarity to defend and promote the human rights of the 2SLGBTQIA+ community. Pride Month is a time to celebrate the 2SLGBTQIA+ community and their contributions to our society! Get involved in Pride Month activities including parades, events, education, support 2SLGBTQIA+ organizations, advocate for 2SLGBTQIA+ rights, and show your support on social media.

National AccessAbility Week (May 31-June 6, 2026) is a time to celebrate the valuable contributions of people with disabilities, and commit to identifying and removing barriers in every part of society to promote equity.

Everyone deserves equal opportunities to meaningfully participate in their communities. About one million British Columbians over the age of 15 live with a disability. That’s why identifying and removing barriers is critical to creating accessible spaces, and combatting the systemic discrimination that prevents people with disabilities from fully participating at work, in their union, and their communities.

Today marks the International Day of Action for Women's Health. The 2026 May 28 theme, “Essential, Not Optional” highlights the need to prioritize sexual and reproductive health and rights and justice is more important in times of multiple crises.

We must come together to mobilize people around the world. And we need to speak out, lobby, advocate for and protect our rights to inclusive, safe, and accessible sexual and reproductive healthcare and health education for women, girls, and gender-diverse people throughout their lives.

Over the decades, activists have come together to campaign for the access and education on important women's health matters such as:

❗ Protecting and advancing sexual and reproductive health and rights
❗ Access to quality health care
❗ Access to safe and legal abortion
❗ Health sector reform and women’s health
❗ Women and HIV/AIDS
❗ Access to contraceptives

HEU will continue to protect the right for women, girls and gender-diverse people to make decisions about their own bodies and futures.

Take action today by:
🗨️ Speaking out and share your story
✖️ Speaking out against all forms of discrimination
❤️‍🩹 Advocating for inclusive health care for women, girls, and gender-diverse people
📃 Lobbying the provincial and federal governments for the protection and fulfillment of sexual and reproductive health
