There's a difference between being served and being known.

At Journey Home Community, we walk alongside refugee claimant families as neighbours β€” not as caseworkers, not as service providers, but as people who show up, stay, and genuinely care.

That kind of relationship doesn't fix everything. But it changes what's possible.

We walk alongside families as neighbours, not clients. And we think that distinction matters.

As World Refugee Day approaches, we invite you to add your voice to a growing call for a Canada that continues to welcome refugees and immigrants with compassion, fairness, and humanity.

For over 20 years, Journey Home Community has had the privilege of walking alongside refugee claimant families as they rebuild their lives in Canada. Every day, we witness the courage, resilience, and contributions they bring to our communities.

At a time when anti-refugee and anti-immigrant sentiment is on the rise, silence can be mistaken for agreement. This petition is an opportunity to speak up and affirm the kind of Canada we want to beβ€”one that welcomes newcomers and recognizes the value they bring to our communities.

Housing. Community. Language. And now β€” the waiting.

For the Reyes family, the refugee claim process brought a new layer of uncertainty. Even with a safe place to stay and a growing sense of belonging, the question of whether they would be allowed to remain in Canada was always present.

"We didn't know if we would be allowed to stay. It was always in the back of our minds."

Journey Home Community helped connect them with legal support and walked alongside them through the uncertainty β€” so they didn't have to carry it alone.

This is what wraparound settlement support looks like in practice.

One of the most common misconceptions about refugee claimants is that the government provides them with housing when they arrive.

The reality is very different.

Most refugee claimants don't qualify for social housing, and private rentals are largely inaccessible without credit history, employment documentation, or local references.

Journey Home Community exists to bridge that gap β€” providing emergency transitional housing so families have a safe, stable place to land while they find their footing.

Because a safe place to land changes everything that follows.

Housing gave the Reyes family safety. But safety alone doesn't build belonging.

Even after settling into a JHC community house, the family faced the quieter challenge of connection. Language barriers made it hard for the children to make friends. Familiar community felt far away.

"Back home, we had many friends but here, the language makes it hard to connect."

Journey Home Community created spaces to help: English classes, community-wide events, and gatherings where families could meet, practise language, and simply be around others.

Over time, those spaces became something more than programming. They became community.

"They felt encouraged to learn, adapt, and slowly integrate into Canadian society."

That's what belonging looks like when it starts to take root.

The skills refugee claimant families bring to Canada don't disappear when they cross the border.

What changes is their ability to access opportunity β€” because the systems, credentials, and networks they built at home don't always transfer right away.

That transition period can be long and discouraging. But it doesn't define who these families are or what they're capable of.

At Journey Home Community, we walk alongside people in that in-between season β€” providing housing, support, and community while they find their footing.

Because what looks like a beginning is often the continuation of something remarkable.

This week's cuisine draws from a part of the world where the Indian Ocean has shaped both trade and taste for centuries.

The Reyes family's first weeks in Canada were marked by uncertainty β€” including the painful experience of being separated across two different shelters just to have a place to sleep.

"It was so hard not being together and being so far apart."

A referral eventually connected them to Journey Home Community. When they moved into a JHC community house, the change was palpable.

"At the shelter, I was always afraid and felt lonely," grandma shared. "But at the community house we had bedrooms and I felt like a princess because of the bed I got to sleep in."

For the children, it was the first time in weeks they had a safe space to simply be kids.

Their time at the community house marked the beginning of their healing β€” and the start of what would become a remarkable journey forward.

When we think about what refugee claimant families need when they arrive in Canada, we often think of the practical things β€” housing, healthcare, legal support.

And those things are essential.

But there's something that's harder to name and just as important: a sense of belonging. People who know your name. Places where you feel welcome.

At Journey Home Community, we build community on purpose β€” through shared meals, gatherings, and the everyday moments that slowly become connections.

Because over time, those moments become something more. They become belonging.
