Every pound of food has purpose at GVFB.

Through our circular food recovery process, surplus produce is rescued from local farm partners and distributed to community members experiencing food insecurity. When food can’t be shared fresh, it’s transformed into value-added products such as juice and freeze-dried foods. Any remaining organic material is diverted through sustainability partners, where it becomes cattle feed, worm feed, and nutrient rich soil.

It was an honour to support one of our Provincial Agency partners, the Lake Country Food Bank, during their golf tournament fundraiser last week. The Lake Country Food Bank has a wide reach in the Okanagan and eastern BC through their Helping Through Sharing Network. We got to meet some members of the amazing community who make this incredible work possible.

Through reuniting with old friends and making new ones, we were able to share laughs and connect about our mutual goal of providing healthy and nutritious food to our communities. Connections and partnerships like these keep food cycling through the province and foster innovative approaches to tackling food insecurity!

We recently had the opportunity to sit down with John Nicola, Executive Chair and CIO of Nicola Wealth on The Wealth Exchange Podcast alongside our CEO, David Long, for an important conversation about food insecurity and the future of food support in our communities.

One of the most powerful takeaways from the conversation was this:
The issue is not a lack of food.
It’s a distribution problem.

Addressing food insecurity requires stronger systems, collaboration, and community partnerships to ensure food reaches the people who need it most.

Thank you to John Nicola and the team for creating space for these important conversations and helping shine a light on the work happening behind the scenes to support our communities.

Our visit to Rai Brothers was a reminder of the partnerships that help make this work possible.

For 16 years, Param and his family have supported the Greater Vancouver Food Bank. This year, we’re continuing that partnership and celebrating a new milestone as Param’s son, Gagan, launches his own 5-acre farm, bringing even more apples, peaches, nectarines, and cherries to support our community.

Harvest season is just around the corner, with cherries arriving as early as June.

Long-standing relationships like these are at the heart of what we do.

We’ve got some fun news to share! The GVFB is planning to grow apple trees right outside the food bank, giving kids the chance to experience the joy of picking fresh fruit during harvest season. This little orchard will help children learn where food comes from and enjoy a healthy snack straight from the tree.

It’s a simple, hands-on way to bring together community, nutrition, and nature.

What an inspiring evening at the YWCA Women of Distinction Awards celebrating the incredible women, leaders, and organizations helping shape stronger communities across Metro Vancouver. We are truly honoured to have been nominated for Outstanding Workplace and recognized alongside so many impactful organizations.

Tonight was a reminder of the importance of creating workplaces where people feel supported, empowered, and valued. At the Greater Vancouver Food Bank, we are especially grateful for the remarkable women across our organization whose leadership, compassion, creativity, and dedication help make our work possible every day.

Congratulations to all of this year’s nominees and award recipients, and thank you to the YWCA for hosting such a meaningful celebration of leadership and community impact. 💛
