Our members include facility operators, utility managers, engineers, consultants, researchers, suppliers, and cross connection control testers and inspecto

rs from across BC and the Yukon. Our programs and services include:

Operator Training - the BCWWA offers a comprehensive range of training courses for water and wastewater operators, with flexible training options including in-class, on-site, online and self-delivery. Cross Connection Control Certification - the BCWWA is the recognized authority for voluntary certification of backflow assembly testers and inspectors in BC and the Yukon. Professional Development Events - the BCWWA organizes conferences, seminars and events to facilitate professional development and networking. Our Annual Conference & Trade Show is the largest conference of its kind in Western Canada. Public Advocacy - with over 4,700 members from across the BC and Yukon region, the BCWWA is a powerful voice for the water and wastewater sector, working to ensure that elected officials and every British Columbian understands the value of water and the importance of our water and wastewater systems to public health.

Full circle moment! 💫 It was a joy to see our 2025 Student Design Competition winners present to the City of Coquitlam Council today. Team StormWise Innovations, comprised of UBC students Jaden Gauw, Jaden Mah, Kajal Mishra, Cindy Chow and Megan Slot, shared insights on their innovative stormwater management solution for Coquitlam’s Nelson Creek Watershed and reflected on their journey to earning first place at both the regional BCWWA and international WEFTEC competitions.

A big thank you to the City of Coquitlam council and staff for taking the time to hear from these talented students and for recognizing the value of student design competitions in shaping future water professionals.
We also extend our gratitude to city staff Cassidy Stadel and Trevor Cheung for their guidance as city liaisons throughout the process, and to Dr. Zeina Baalbaki, UBC faculty advisor, for her mentorship and support.

2025 Leadership Council has officially wrapped! Yesterday, the BCWWA Board of Directors and 20+ co-leads from BCWWA’s committees, communities of practice and groups met for a day of engagement, learning and cross-collaboration across all leadership and program areas of the BCWWA.

We look forward to this annual event as a valuable opportunity to hear from our volunteer leaders, gather feedback, and strengthen our understanding of how best to serve and advocate for our members.

Thank you, Brian Bedford from the Ministry of Municipal Affairs, for joining us and leading the conversation on how government staff and our sector can build relationships.
And thank you to all the co-leads who took the time to attend Leadership Council. The room was filled with energy, ideas, and meaningful discussion—and we’re excited to carry that momentum forward into the new year!

In this week, the BCWWA had the opportunity to return to the Ministry of Water, Land and Resource Stewardship (WLRS) for a follow-up meeting. Board Members, Brianne Tenk, Deirdre Moran and Ted Molyneux along with CEO Lee Coonfer and CEO Katja Roberts met with WLRS Ministerial Assistant Marshall Scott-Bigsby to discuss small water systems, water sector workforce resilience and building engagement between government and the sector.

Thank you, Ministry of Water, Land and Resource Stewardship for continuing the conversation on the future of water with us. 💧

Canadian Water and Wastewater Association’s National Water & Wastewater Conference is underway this week in Victoria! 🍁

Victoria has long been a favourite conference destination for BCWWA and is home to BC’s Legislature, making it the perfect setting for national water conversations.

The event kicked off with opening remarks from Mayor Marianne Alto, followed by a meaningful land acknowledgement delivered by Florence Dick of the Songhees Nation.

And of course, we couldn’t miss the chance to give a warm BCWWA welcome to CWWA Executive Director Robert Haller - complete with our signature BCWWA water drop hat and an “I ❤️ BC Water” water bottle!

The BC Small Water Systems Community Network has an exciting opportunity for anyone who has a depth and breadth of experience in small water systems who would like to contribute to the community in a meaningful way.

🎉 Congratulations to Team Thunderbird Rainwater Solutions, the winners of the 2024 Student Design Competition! 🎉

The student team from the University of British Columbia is comprised of Elizabeth Liu (team lead), Harshvardhan Shaw, Nicolas Cho, Benjamin Buchheit and Claire Merchant. In this year’s competition, students were asked to assess the feasibility of different blue green system typologies along West 1st Ave in the Olympic Village neighborhood, with considerations for stormwater quality and flood management.

The team will be recognized at BCWWA’s 2024 Annual Conference & Trade Show and move on to compete at the Water Environment Federation Technical Exhibition and Conference (WEFTEC) in New Orleans in October.
