Combustibles don’t always look like the obvious culprits. Plastic patio furniture and toys (or even paddleboards) stored next to the house also pose a risk during wildfire season.

Spend a few minutes moving combustibles at least 10 metres away from your home. It’s a small step that could make a big difference.

Plan Ahead! If a fire breaks out in your home, you may have only a few minutes to get out safely once the smoke alarm sounds.
Make a plan with all members of your household, identifying all exits and escape routes.
Practice your plan at least twice a year, make it as safe and realistic as possible, and make sure at least one of those practices is conducted at night.

Community doesn’t just mean where you live.
A community can take many forms, including neighbours, faith groups or people with shared hobbies.

Building strong community connections before an emergency makes it easier to support one another when it matters most.
▪️Start by reaching out, saying hi, and suggesting a conversation about shared preparedness.
▪️Talk about local risks. Discuss the hazards in your area and identify people who may need extra support in an emergency.
▪️Assign responsibilities for an emergency response, such as first aid, cleanup or checking on vulnerable individuals.
