🏡🌲 DID YOU KNOW? | What Is a Secondary Plan?

Did you know that Greater Madawaska currently operates under the County of Renfrew Official Plan?
The County establishes broad planning policies, but the Township does not currently have a detailed, community-specific Secondary Plan for Calabogie.

❓ Why does that matter?

The County of Renfrew is the approval authority for plans of subdivision, not Township Council.
The Township reviews applications and provides comments, but the County makes the approval decisions.
A Secondary Plan would establish more detailed local policies to help guide future development decisions, considering housing, businesses, community services, infrastructure and environmental protection.

🌲 Why Calabogie and not all of Greater Madawaska?

The County Official Plan identifies Calabogie as a Village Community, where growth and development are generally directed.
This is a first step. Other planning policies and growth management needs across Greater Madawaska will continue to be reviewed.

🗣️ Was the public consulted?

Yes! Residents and community members have had opportunities to provide input through:
📋 Community surveys
📍 Community pop-ups and an open house
🗺️ Public visioning and mapping activities

Feedback included protecting Calabogie's natural character, improving connections, supporting local services and considering future community needs.
Consultation isn't finished!
Additional public input will be sought as the Plan progresses.

📋 Why were consultants hired?

A Secondary Plan requires more than a map or community survey. Qualified professionals review environmental features, roads, drainage, servicing, heritage and planning requirements.
This technical work, combined with community feedback, helps inform the draft policies and recommendations.

🏡 Does this mean new development is approved?

No. The draft does not approve subdivisions, require landowners to develop their properties or transfer ownership of private land.
It establishes planning direction for future development applications.

📅 What Next?

Council continues to review and discuss the draft Calabogie Secondary Plan.
The Plan is not final. Further public consultation and approvals are still required.

Online voting for the 2026 Municipal Election officially opens today, October 13, at 10:00 a.m.!

📬 Voter Information Letters
Most voter information letters should have arrived by Friday, October 9.

If you have not received your letter by Wednesday, October 21, please contact the Township Office.

If you receive a voter information letter addressed to someone who no longer lives at your address or is no longer eligible to vote, please mark the envelope “Return to Sender” and return it through Canada Post.

Please note that the Township of Greater Madawaska Municipal Office will be closed on Monday, October 12 in recognition of the Thanksgiving holiday.

We’ll be taking a little time to enjoy the long weekend, and we hope you get the chance to do the same! 💚

✅If you are eligible to vote and have not received your letter by October 13, 2026, contact the Township Office for assistance.

➡️You will need the PIN and instructions contained in the letter to be able to vote in the Greater Madawaska 2026 Municipal Election.

The voting period is October 13, 2026 10:00am to October 26, 2026 8:00pm.
