The smallest room in the house does the quietest work. 🚿

Hot water that doesn't run out. A shelf with her own shampoo on it, the kind she picked. A towel that's dry because she's the one who hung it there. A lock that works.

Twenty minutes where nobody needs anything from her.

It sounds like a small thing. It isn't. When you've spent months couch surfing, or in a house where the bathroom door didn't lock, or somewhere you had to be quick and quiet and grateful — privacy stops feeling like a right and starts feeling like a luxury.

Getting that back takes time. It usually happens before she can name it.

A bathroom becomes dignity. And dignity is where she starts looking in the mirror like she's someone worth taking care of.

You've stood inside their work without ever knowing it. 🌊

Western Electrical has claimed a space on the board as a Property Sponsor of Pearls & Tides.

For more than 60 years, they've wired some of Calgary's most iconic buildings — The Bow, Bankers Hall, the towers that make up our skyline. The kind of work you never see, but everything depends on.

A safe place to sleep is where it starts. It isn't where it ends.

For a young woman who comes to Safe Haven, the first thing that changes is that she stops worrying about where she's going tonight. What happens after that is the real work — finishing school, learning to budget, holding down a job, building relationships with people who show up for her consistently. That's the part that takes time, and staff, and steady support behind it.

Meet Ed and Gaby.

Once a month, they come in and cook dinner for the girls at Haven's Way. They've become a familiar part of this place — two people the girls know by name, who turn up because they want to.

When we talk about the ripple effect, this is what we mean.

Safe Haven has never been one thing. It's a network of people who each take on a piece of it — the donors, the board, the staff who work the overnight shifts, the alumni who come back to tell the girls it gets better, and the volunteers like Ed and Gaby who make sure there's a good dinner on the table once a month. Nobody carries it alone. Everyone moves it forward.

Thirty years on, that's still how this works. One person does something. It reaches a girl. She goes on to build a life. And the ripple keeps going, far past where any of us can see it.

Sometimes it comes back, too. One of our youth made this drawing and gave it to Ed and Gaby — her own way of saying thank you, and proof that what they bring here doesn't go unnoticed.

For most young people, homelessness doesn't start on the street. It starts at home. 🏡

- More than half of youth experiencing homelessness in Canada lost their housing because of an interpersonal issue — conflict with or abuse by a parent, guardian, or partner. For adults, that number is 31%.
- Conflict with a parent or guardian alone accounts for 30% of youth housing loss. Among adults, it's 5%.

And it doesn't stay in adolescence. Roughly 44% of everyone surveyed — at every age — first lost their housing before they turned 25.

That's what "before it begins" means. Not a slogan. A window.

The room where nothing has to happen. 🛋️

There's a blanket on the arm of the couch that never quite gets folded. A lamp in the corner that somebody always turns on before it's properly dark. Cushions with dents in them from a hundred evenings. A puzzle on the coffee table that's been three-quarters done since March.

This is where trust gets built. It takes a long time to believe you're safe somewhere. It takes even longer to relax there.

We said a living room becomes belonging. This is what we meant.

Because the girl who can put her feet up on the coffee table is the girl who finally believes she's home. And that's where the ripple effect gathers speed.
