Every great movement starts with one person who believes in something bigger. This Volunteer Appreciation Week, we honour our founder and President, Darlene, whose heart, vision, and countless hours have made Play-it-Forward what it is today. Thank you, Darlene, for living the dream and reminding us that we can always make a difference to someone, no matter what role we play!

Swipe to read one of the most heartwarming stories from our incredible volunteers. We asked some of our volunteers to share a moment that stuck with them, a moment during their time volunteering that they will never forget. Ric shared this. This Volunteer Appreciation Week, we’re celebrating the people who show up and change lives. Thank you, Ric!

Volunteer Testimonial:
The whole experience of working at the Kimunyu School in Ibanda, Uganda has been absolutely life-changing in every way. I was moved emotionally and spiritually right from the get-go. It brought so much joy to my heart to see how excited the staff and students were to see us/work with us, and how appreciative they were for the gift of the equipment and supplies we provided them with. The feedback we received from the staff was so positive! They loved the idea of using the equipment in different ways; delivering various lesson activities to build body awareness, movement, skill development, and to bring joy to the students. They also loved that the materials we provided were broken down into easy to follow, step by step instructional plans with pictures to accompany every activity so they could remember how to continue using the program after we were gone. It was cute when they asked if there was any way we could stay longer! The children and staff have extreme pride in their school and now it shines even brighter for the information and tools we provided for them, and the experiences we’ve had together. The close bond we created with the students and staff in just one short week is incredible which made it so difficult to leave. I will always deeply cherish this rewarding, positive experience with the Play It Forward Uganda Project as I learned just as much or more from working with the students and staff as we shared with them. I can’t thank you enough, Darlene, for believing in me and taking me along to join you and the “Dream-team” on this venture! My time spent in Uganda will always hold a special, dear place in my heart.

Volunteer testimonial:

All children love to play. It’s important as well. And to be a part of a program that gives them the tools of so many different options in how to use certain pieces of equipment …and leave that equipment behind for them, feels so good. To come into their world of a bare, red clay, rocky and barren school yard, but leave seeing color, and excitement, and the pure joy on their little faces…you just know you’ve brightened their world, both physically and mentally. And how beautiful it is, to give to someone who can never repay you (something everyone should experience at some point)…my heart and soul is forever changed..

I will be forever grateful for my experience with Play-It-Forward. The children of Uganda impacted my heart deeper than I could have ever anticipated. I tear up even just thinking about their eyes. Their eyes are so bright, and you can feel their spirit through their smiles. We worked hard and we played harder, which was the most rewarding and transformative journey.
I will be staying in contact with many of the teachers and families, project organizers and volunteers, and sponsoring a child who I fell deeply in love with. To say that I am eternally grateful is an understatement. Thank you Darlene and the Play-it-Forward team for your love, passion, drive, courage, and dedication. You have reminded all of us that true wealth lies within the richness of the human spirit, fostered through LOVE and PLAY. Thank you for this unforgettable experience.
