Canada and Finland are Strengthening Arctic Maritime Cooperation

An Inuit led company (QHAS) is leading the effort to bring the Finnish icebreaker, MSV Nordica, to the Canadian Arctic to support the Canadian Coast Guard. The 2026 Canada-Finland Maritime Memorandum of Understanding provides the framework for closer cooperation on maritime and ice capabilities and to advance innovation in shipbuilding, ports and marine technologies. As part of the Icebreaker Collaboration Effort (ICE Pact) both countries are partnering to building advanced icebreakers and develop related technologies to ensure the Arctic remains secure and prosperous.

AALTO WORKS Has Been Inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List

The property consists of thirteen modern buildings and ensembles across Finland (1928–1988) that exemplify the 20th‑century Modern Movement and its response to broad social needs. These civic, community, and residential structures—found in both urban and rural settings—are internationally associated with Alvar Aalto, yet they reflect the collaborative creativity of Aalto, Aino Marsio‑Aalto, Elissa Aalto, the Aalto studio, and their design partners. Rooted in Finnish building traditions while drawing on global modernist ideas, the works express a human‑centred, site‑specific, and empathetic vision that distinguishes Finland’s contribution to modern architecture.

This is a proud moment for Finland and Finnish architecture.
