๐ŸšŒ As students across Calgary prepare to return to the classroom, we are encouraging families to make safety part of their back-to-school routine by discussing personal safety, online safety & safe travel to & from school.

Whether children are starting kindergarten, moving to junior high or preparing for their last year of high school, the start of a new school year presents an opportunity for parents & caregivers to have important conversations about making safe choices both in person & online.

๐Ÿป This school year, the CPS is expanding its youth safety education efforts with the launch of Simon Says, a new safety-awareness campaign for children in kindergarten through Grade 5. The initiative provides age-appropriate safety messages through schools, newsletters & school outreach, helping younger children build positive safety habits early in life.

๐Ÿ“ฑ The CPS has also expanded its digital outreach to older youth through its growing social media presence, including TikTok. The platform will be used to share safety information & engage youth on topics such as online safety, digital citizenship & making informed decisions both online & in the community. The initiative aligns with the Service's youth-focused education & awareness efforts aimed at students in Grades 6 to 12.

By combining in-person education, community engagement & digital outreach, the CPS continues to support youth safety & help young people develop the knowledge & skills they need to navigate today's increasingly connected world.

๐Ÿ’Š August is National Drug Drop-Off Month, & today we recognize International Overdose Awareness Day.

Before back-to-school routines return, we wanted to remind everyone to take a few minutes to check the medications in their home. Unused prescription & over-the-counter medications can increase the risk of accidental poisoning, misuse & overdose.

When reviewing your medicine cabinet, look for:
โœ… Expired medications
โœ… Unused prescriptions
โœ… Unlabeled pills or containers
โœ… Duplicate medications

If you find medications that are no longer needed, take them to your local pharmacy for safe disposal.

Cleaning out your medicine cabinet is one small step that can help reduce risk, support overdose prevention efforts & protect your family and community.
