In Canada, Indigenous people make up 32% of federally incarcerated individuals despite representing just over 4% of the population. This reflects the lasting impacts of residential schools, forced separation, and systemic barriers that continue to shape access to stability and opportunity.

During Indigenous History Month, this context is an important part of understanding how we can prevent future harm and support safer communities.

An effective approach to justice should resolve conflict and repair harm, while holding individuals accountable.

Through understanding the context behind actions and supporting those involved, accountability is strengthened, and the risk of future harm is reduced.

Leaving custody without housing or support can make it difficult to find stability after release.

Without a place to live, the risk of returning to old environments and patterns increases. Through housing support, one-on-one guidance, and connections to employment programs, the Calgary John Howard Society helps individuals build a foundation for what comes next.

This support plays an important role in making Calgary communities safer for everyone.

May is Mental Health Month, and at the Calgary John Howard Society, we recognize how closely mental health challenges are connected to involvement in the justice system.

Rates of mental illness are two to three times higher among individuals in custody than in the general population. Many are living with complex needs that require consistent support, care, and access to services.

When we invest in mental health, we help break the cycle of reoffending — supporting individuals in building stable, healthy, successful lives and creating a safer community for us all.

Last week, our team attended the 7th Biennial Alberta Criminal Justice Symposium, connecting with peers and leaders across the sector.

A highlight was hearing from keynote speaker Senator Kim Pate, whose work continues to shape conversations around justice and reform.

We are continuously grateful for the opportunity to learn, reflect, and be part of these important conversations.

Exercise can play a meaningful role in reducing reoffending and supporting community safety.

At Bedford House, our men’s Community Residential Facility, the focus is on stability and reducing the likelihood that individuals return to the justice system after incarceration. Access to consistent, positive activities helps support this work.

Thanks to the generosity of Bells of Steel, Bedford House now has on‑site gym equipment available for residents. Exercise supports mental health, recovery, and routine — all of which are linked to lower rates of reoffending.

Having fitness equipment within the facility also removes common barriers that many residents face, including the cost of gym memberships, transportation challenges, and discomfort accessing community spaces early in reintegration.

"At Bells of Steel, we’re driven by a simple belief: strength-both mental and physical-should be accessible for all. We’re honored to support Bedford House in their mission to create safer, stronger communities by providing residents with on-site gym equipment. We hope this helps everyone at Bedford House build healthy habits, resilience, and confidence as they work toward long-term success."

By supporting programs that strengthen daily structure and accountability, partners like Bells of Steel contribute to safer communities and more successful transitions back into the community.

“It builds you up as a person and gives you the skills to get into the workforce.”

Through our employment programs, participants build practical, job-ready skills. This includes workshops, mock interviews, financial literacy, and hands-on support to prepare for employment.

Finding stable employment is one of the top factors to help reduce reoffending. CJHS works to break this cycle by helping participants build stable, long-term employment and financial independence, improving community safety for everyone.

Programs like this help reduce crime and keep communities safe.

Last week, our team came together to sign thank-you cards for our donors.

Each card included a small packet of seeds as a symbol of the growth that donor support creates and the impact it has in our community.

Thank you to the CJHS staff for taking the time to participate.

May 5 is Red Dress Day, a National Day of Awareness and Action to honour Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, and Two-Spirit People.

Today, we take time to remember those who are missing, those who were taken, and the families and communities who continue to be impacted.

We recognize the importance of this day and the ongoing need for awareness, accountability, and change.
