What does environmental training actually look like in a community setting?
From May 4–14, 2026, ECO Canada delivered BEAHR Aquatic Technician Training in Benoit’s Cove, Newfoundland and Labrador, in partnership with Benoit's Cove Indian Band.
Over two weeks, participants from four First Nations communities spent time both in the classroom and out in the field, learning how to measure water quality, study streams, and collect environmental data in the local area.
But just as important as the technical skills was how the learning happened.There was space for sharing knowledge, learning from each other’s experiences, and connecting with the community, whether that was through time on the land, conversations in class, or coming together for shared meals and a community feast.
By the end of the training, participants weren’t just finishing a course, they were already looking at next steps, including employment opportunities and further environmental training.
Delivered in partnership with the Ocean Alliance Canada (OAC) and funded by Future Skills Center and the Indigenous Ocean Futures project, this is part of ongoing work to bring accessible, community-based environmental training to more communities across Canada.
