Our CBFY office will be closed on September 30th to observe National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. We will reopen on Thursday, October 1st.

National Day for Truth and Reconciliation is a day for learning and reconciling as we remember and honour residential school survivors, their families, the children who didn’t make it home, and future generations.

Below, you can learn about some local Calgary events on Wednesday providing ongoing learning and reconciliation.

-Pokaiks ‘The Children’ Reconciliation Walk: Children’s commemorative walk, this free gathering honors indigenous children past, present and future.

-The Confluence Historic Site & Parkland: Free programming all day, including programming in tepees, educational walking tours, and free admission to cultural centre exhibits.

-Heritage Park: Evening Truth and Reconciliation Pow Wow from 6 PM until 9 PM. There will be live music performances, and an Indigenous market featuring local vendors from 4 PM until 9 PM.

- University of Calgary in partnership with Calgary Public Library: Free, public UCalgary Indigenous Engagement Events offer film screenings, speakers, and resources dedicated to learning about residential school history.

-Women’s Centre of Calgary: The Fabric of Our Stories, a workshop that explores the harm of residential schools and a conversation about reconciliation.

Last night, our CEO, Frank Cattoni, presented as the Impact Speaker at the United Way of Calgary and Area’s Event for Enbridge. Frank spoke about the belief that drives our work at CBFY: that when young people feel safe and supported in school, they can see a future for themselves in Calgary.

“When a young person arrives in Canada, they may be learning a new language, adjusting to new routines, carrying big expectations from home, and trying to make sense of a new school system,” Frank said. “For some, every school day can feel like something to survive, not a place where they feel safe, seen, and belong.”

“Together, we can help young people move from uncertainty to confidence, from isolation to connection, and from potential to contribution.”

The young people we support today are the future workforce of Calgary, and they bring multilingual ability, cultural fluency, persistence, adaptability, and resilience they’ve developed through real-life experiences.

Thank you to the United Way Calgary and Area for your continued support, and for the opportunity to share CBFY’s impact with the Calgary community.

Are you a youth age 18-30? Register for our Functional English Course!

In this 12-week course, you will improve your English language and everyday communication skills for the workforce.

The course runs Monday-Thursday from 4 pm – 7 pm at the CBFY office. Classes are flexible, supportive, and focused on learning by doing. You will practice new vocabulary and use what you learn in everyday situations.

Through group discussions and activities, FEC participants will learn about Canadian culture, build connections, and develop a stronger sense of belonging in their community.

Today, we recognized the 60th anniversary of International Literacy Day. Literacy skills are the foundation that helps students establish values, skills, and knowledge necessary for their future. 📖📝

At CBFY, we provide programs to newcomer children and youth that promote and teach literacy skills like reading and writing comprehension, critical thinking skills, civic literacy, digital literacy, and functional English language skills.

-Our Peace & Justice Project provides newcomer youth with knowledge to understand their rights and responsibilities in Canada. It helps youth feel a sense of belonging and empowerment in their new home.
-New Horizons encouraged cross-generational connection as youth helped elderly populations develop digital literacy skills.
-Our Functional English Courses help newcomer youth ages 18-30 develop English language skills needed for daily life, work, and future education. The program also touches on digital and financial literacy, so participants can feel more confident and independent.

Developing skills at our programs helps newcomer children and youth thrive. And when children thrive, communities thrive.
