The Nunavut Impact Review Board (NIRB) is Nunavut’s environmental assessment agency, with responsibilities for assessing the potential impacts of proposed projects before any required permits, licenses and approvals can be granted. The Nunavut Impact Review Board (NIRB) is an institution of public government created by the Nunavut Agreement to assess the potential impacts of proposed development i

n the Nunavut Settlement Area prior to approval of the required project authorizations. Using both traditional knowledge and recognized scientific methods, the NIRB assesses the potential biophysical and socioeconomic impact of proposals and will make recommendations and decisions about which projects may proceed. The Board may also establish monitoring programs for projects that have been assessed and approved to proceed.

La Commission du Nunavut chargée de l’examen des répercussions est une institution gouvernementale, établie en vertu de l’Accord sur les revendications territoriales du Nunavut afin d’évaluer, avant la délivrance des approbations requises, les éventuelles répercussions des projets de développement proposés dans la région du Nunavut. Utilisant le savoir traditionnel et des méthodes scientifiques reconnues, la CNER évalue les éventuelles incidences biophysiques et socioéconomiques des projets proposés et formule les recommandations et décisions visant la poursuite du projet. La Commission peut également instaurer des programmes de surveillance pour des projets déjà évalués et dont la réalisation a été approuvée.
