We Wai Kai Elders Free Event - Sign up required.

What is osteopathy: a holistic healthcare approach that focuses on the musculoskeletal, viseral and cranio-sacral systems and their connection to overall health. It can be beneficial for both injuries and stress management. We use manual techniques to address imbalances, restore proper function, and promote healing in the body.

For injuries, we assess the whole body to identify any contributing factors and then employ techniques like soft tissue manipulation and joint mobilization to reduce pain, inflammation, and improve movement. In terms of stress, osteopathy recognizes the physical and emotional impact it can have. We use techniques to calm the body's stress response, reduce muscle tension, and promote relaxation.

We are so proud to have Kayla as a staff member with our Guardians program! She is an astute, kind, and fun colleague!

“I never learned so much as when I was learning with other people on the land,” says Kayla Christensen (BA, 2026) of her most memorable experiences as an Indigenous Studies major at Simon Fraser University. Christensen credits joining SFU Indigenous Studies’ Land-Based Field Course (INDG 435) as a turning point in her undergraduate career.

“I am from the We Wai Kai First Nation and I grew up in community. It was a big step to move away from home to attend university,” she reflects. While she faced challenges starting her degree during the often-isolating era of the pandemic, as she progressed through her academic journey, Christensen found that her outlook changed when she decided to step out of her comfort zone. Determined to make the most of her time as a student and gain new experiences, Christensen applied to participate in the Land-Based Field Course.

In May 2025, Christensen was thrilled to enrol in the course and make the trek to the Madii Lii culture camp, which is located within Luutkudziiwus (Gitxsan) Territories near Hazelton, BC. Led by Indigenous Studies associate professor Chelsey Armstrong, the Land-Based Field Course was designed in partnership with Wilp Luutkudziiwus (Gitxsan).

Along with instruction and mentorship from Armstrong, Christensen appreciated the opportunity to learn from Gitxsan knowledge holders and land defenders. “It didn’t feel like a course because of how it was facilitated,” Christensen explains. “We built solid relationships with each other: the SFU students, Gitxsan community members, including Gitxsan university students, and those teaching us. It wasn’t my community, but everyone made it feel like home.”

On October 3, 2026, We Wai Kai Nation gathered for the Administration Building Pole Blessing.

The gathering included K’amk’amxwaliła – Eagle Down Blessing Ceremony, Tłalkwała – Ladies’ Dance, and Mumalkaliła – speeches by Chiefs and dignitaries.

It was a beautiful day of ceremony and celebration, bringing community together to mark this special occasion.

Gilakas’la to everyone who joined us and shared in the day and for the incredibly gifted Nation artists who made this possible.

🍂 Fall at We Wai Kai Campground

Fall is a beautiful time to enjoy the campground, with quieter days, cooler evenings and plenty of time to enjoy being outdoors.

Starting October 1, lower seasonal rates will be in effect for the fall and winter months.

The Eastern Shore and Forest Loop sites will remain open throughout the season, with power and water available, as well as access to bathroom and shower facilities.

With some beautiful weather ahead, it’s a great time to plan a fall stay.

🌲 Learning on the land and across borders

We Wai Kai representatives and Guardians recently participated in a Coast Funds Learning Exchange, including a hike to the Living Trees with Max Chickite, Art Wilson, Brent Smith and members of our Guardians team.

The exchange brought together Indigenous leaders from B.C. and around the world to share knowledge and build relationships around Indigenous-led conservation, stewardship and sustainable finance.

Organized by Funds, Rockefeller Brothers Fund & Pocantico Center, and New Animal, and facilitated by Na̲nwak̲olas Council with support from the Guardians, the visit was an opportunity for meaningful learning, connection and future collaboration.
