It’s Member Monday, and this week we are introducing Mackenzie.

Mackenzie has been with the CRFD in dispatch for a little over two years now. Born and raised in Campbell River with family in the fire service, she jumped at the chance to apply when the job posting came up. Now a couple years in she is feeling very lucky to have the opportunity to work in such a great service with some pretty cool people.
If not at work, you will find her exploring, hiking the trails, reading in the sunshine, swimming in one of the bodies or water around town, and hanging out with her family and friends.

Fire fighters don't work alone.

On every call and every shift, you rely on the person beside you.

That same principle applies to mental health. If you're struggling, or you notice a colleague who is, reach out. Talk to your leadership team. Access the resources available to you.

This work comes with real exposure to traumatic events. There's no shame in that, and there's no shame in asking for support. The strength of the fire service is in how we show up for each other, and that doesn't stop when the call ends.

This Mental Health Week, check in. The CMHA's theme this year is "Come Together, Canada" which reminds us that stronger connections mean better mental health.

LEGISLATIVE UPDATE: New Presumptive Cancers Officially Recognized

On behalf of the BCPFFA executive board, we are proud to share that as of March 16, 2026, eight additional cancers were officially recognized in British Columbia. This milestone expands our presumptive cancer coverage to 26, the highest in the country. Including Heart Injury and Operational Stress Injury. B.C. fire fighters now lead the nation with 28 total presumptive protections. These additions remove critical barriers for our members, shifting the burden of proof to ensure faster access to care.

Enclosed is a letter from the Hon. Minister Jennifer Whiteside, Minister of Labour addressed to the BCPFFA and Local leadership. I want to highlight our strong collaboration with the Minister, her ministry staff and the ongoing partnership with locals L256 and L1782, which are essential to fostering and maintaining healthy and productive relationships.

On behalf of the executive board, thank our locals for their advocacy. We recognize the support of IAFF/BCPFFA local leadership (past & present), the Provincial Government, and Members of the Legislative Assembly for the dedicated advocacy and partnership that made these protections possible.
