🚨Member Monday🚨

Meet Dustin,

Dustin came to the Campbell River Fire Department by taking the long way around.

Originally from Comox, with stints living on Quadra Island and at Mount Washington Alpine Resort, Dustin began his working career as a school teacher on Salt Spring Island. It was there that he became a paid-on-call firefighter in 2015.

“I accidentally fell in love with the job. Once my daughters, Natalie-Jo and Londyn, were old enough, I decided to pursue a full-time career in the fire service.”

In 2020, Dustin was hired by the Langley City Fire Rescue Service, where he and his girls learned a great deal and built lasting friendships. Wanting to bring his daughters closer to family—and, admittedly, missing island life himself—he jumped at the opportunity to join the Campbell River Fire Department in October 2023.

“I love being a firefighter, a dad, and still a teacher-on-call (Mr Bean). Those roles allow me to work alongside some of the best people I know, keep learning every day, and make a positive difference in the lives of others.”

Campbell River Fire Fighters Union stands with BC Nurses in their fight for fair wages and safe working conditions!

The BC Professional Fire Fighters’ Association stands with BC’s nurses in their efforts to restore safe, sustainable working conditions.

Fire fighters understand firsthand the toll that chronic overtime, staffing shortages, and workplace fatigue can take on workers, their families, and the people who depend on them.

Strong staffing levels and healthy workplaces are essential to providing the high-quality public services that British Columbians deserve.

We support efforts to find collaborative solutions that improve recruitment, retention, and working conditions while ensuring the long-term strength of our public healthcare system.

It’s Member Monday, and this week we are introducing Mackenzie.

Mackenzie has been with the CRFD in dispatch for a little over two years now. Born and raised in Campbell River with family in the fire service, she jumped at the chance to apply when the job posting came up. Now a couple years in she is feeling very lucky to have the opportunity to work in such a great service with some pretty cool people.
If not at work, you will find her exploring, hiking the trails, reading in the sunshine, swimming in one of the bodies or water around town, and hanging out with her family and friends.

Fire fighters don't work alone.

On every call and every shift, you rely on the person beside you.

That same principle applies to mental health. If you're struggling, or you notice a colleague who is, reach out. Talk to your leadership team. Access the resources available to you.

This work comes with real exposure to traumatic events. There's no shame in that, and there's no shame in asking for support. The strength of the fire service is in how we show up for each other, and that doesn't stop when the call ends.

This Mental Health Week, check in. The CMHA's theme this year is "Come Together, Canada" which reminds us that stronger connections mean better mental health.
