You hear us encourage the community to shop local a lot, especially during Small Business Week, and here’s why: when you spend $50 at a local business, that money doesn’t just disappear at the checkout - it becomes part of a bigger economic ripple effect by helping pay someone’s wages, someone’s rent, someone’s mortgage, someone’s child’s hockey registration, or another local supplier’s invoice.

Local businesses hire local people. They support other businesses, sponsor community events and teams, donate to local non-profits, and contribute to the character that's always made Campbell River feel like home. Choosing local when you can helps keep more economic activity circulating within our community.

It's Small Business Week this week from October 19 to 25, 2026, and we'd like to celebrate and acknowledge the small businesses in Campbell River that make the community so special. Maybe it's your favourite coffee shop, maybe it's where you buy your gifts, perhaps it's where you get your hair done. These businesses are the heart of the city, so let's show them some appreciation.

Here’s how you can join in: Tag your favourite small business in Campbell River in the comments below, and you’ll be entered into a draw to win a $50 gift certificate to that business! Let’s spread some local love and give these amazing businesses the recognition they deserve 🥰

With Small Business Week around the corner next week, we've been highlighting our local vendors at the Rail Yard Market this week.

Our final (re)introduction is to another one of the originals at the market in the green sea can: The Mossy Coast. Founded by sisters Michaela and Rochelle, they find their inspiration in Campbell River's backyard, using real leaves, wood, and other sustainably sourced pieces of nature to stamp and decorate apparel and jewelry, making every creation unique.

The third (re)introduction of the Rail Yard Market vendors is one of the originals: the Tin Can Pottery Shop.

Emma's studio is found in the red sea can, where she showcases beautifully handmade, nature-inspired pottery and ceramics, such as mugs, plates, bowls, and jewelry. Emma also hosts guest artists in her shop, expanding her offerings to include art, cards, knits, fibre arts, and clothing.

Up next in our introductions of the Rail Yard Market vendors is another new addition: the Blue Caboose Gallery!

Fittingly located in the blue sea can at the end of the line, the Blue Caboose Gallery showcases local artists in a variety of mediums, from digital to watercolour to sketches. Housing four phenomenal artists, the gallery offers something to bring vibrancy and life to any wall, available as either prints or originals. They also have printed cards for your thank-you notes or well-wishes.

Leading up to Small Business Week, we wanted to reintroduce (and introduce for the new additions!) the vendors at the Rail Yard Market. Open year-round, the Rail Yard opened its doors in the summer of 2024 and has been chugging along nicely ever since. Home to four small businesses, the repurposed sea cans provide an opportunity for local entrepreneurs to test the waters and launch their business before committing to a brick and mortar location. We've seen great success since its opening and hope you'll stop in to say hi!

First up is one of our newer additions: Rainy Coast Crochet! You can find Hannah and her adorable crochet creations in the yellow sea can. Along with her handmade crochet pals, she also has yarn, supplies, and DIY kits so you can try your hand at recreating one of her patterns.

A map can show us where a place begins and ends, but the history of a place goes far beyond its reach. It lives in the people who share its deepest stories, those who have known and cared for the lands and waters for generations. Campbell River sits within the traditional territories of the Liǧʷiłdax̌ʷ people, whose unwavering connections are reflected in the community today.

Reconciliation isn't just a moment or a day; rather, it's something we build through the relationships we forge and choices we make in the community every day. Today, on the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, and every day, take the time to listen to the stories and honour the survivors and those who continue to navigate the impacts of that history. May we carry those stories with care and reflection.

📆 Closed – Wednesday, September 30, 2026:

City Hall, Downtown Safety Office (officers will still be on duty from 8:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.), Dogwood Operations Centre, Campbell River Community Centre and the Sportsplex

🗑️Curbside Collection Reminders:

Collection will not take place on the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation statutory holiday; the schedule will move forward one weekday and resume on Thursday, October 1.

We've spent National Forest week talking about the history of the forestry sector around the area and its influence on the economy, but the forest means something different to everyone.

Maybe it's your favourite trail around Beaver Lodge, or pausing at the edge of the Canyon View to soak up the sound of the water lapping against the rocks in the river, or watching the changing leaves float from the trees into the falls at Elk Falls. Maybe it's simply knowing that a little bit of wildness is never too far away.
