Come and meet Gord Johns and Avi Lewis this Saturday in Qualicum!

Corn, cake, conversation, some great live jazz and barn-burner political speeches! Just a figure of speech of course, we shouldn’t be burning down barns for any reason. The thing is, I’d love to have you join me on Saturday, August 29 at 3:00 p.m. in Qualicum Beach for our annual NDP summer fundraising gathering.

I’m more than a little excited to welcome NDP Leader Avi Lewis as our special guest, along with Corn Roast veteran and legendary JUNO Award-winning jazz musician, Phil Dwyer!

Come enjoy freshly harvested Errington corn, cake, music and good company, catch up with friends and neighbours, and hear from Avi about the work ahead to build a fairer, more hopeful future for our country.

Everyone is welcome! Please come regardless of your political views or if you are maybe a New Democrat but don’t quite know it yet. Here’s the details and RSVP information, please share this post with Friends who might like to join us on Saturday.

Saturday, August 29
3:00 p.m.

Gord Johns is bringing his Fair Ferries Funding Tour to North Island Powell River September 15th, 9:00 in Comox and 12:00 in qathet/Powell River. Be there to show your support!

MARK YOUR CALENDAR: FAIR FERRY FUNDING RALLIES: SEPTEMBER 14–17

In September, we’re taking our campaign for fair federal funding for BC Ferries on the road, and we need you to join us!

These will be quick, focused rallies--usually about 30 minutes--so you don’t have to give up a big part of your day. Just come out, grab a sign and help us send Ottawa a clear message: FAIR FEDERAL FERRY FUNDING!

A few things to know:

--Make your own sign!, if you can! Keep it simple and use “Fair Federal Ferry Funding” as the message. Or just show up, we’ll be bringing signs that you can borrow and wave.

--Please help us stay focused. These rallies are specifically about federal ferry funding, not about the provincial management of BC Ferries or other ferry issues. The clearer and more united our message is, the more effective we will be.

--Everyone is welcome. These are non-partisan rallies, and elected officials from every level of government and every political stripe are invited to join us.

--Not on our schedule? Hold your own rally! Get some friends and neighbours together, make some signs, tag us and send us your photos.

--Are you along our route? Let us know! If we can make it work, we’ll try to stop and do a quick sign wave with you along the way.

Most importantly, we need people to come out and wave signs. We’ll bring some with us, you bring your voice!

For coastal communities, ferries are essential transportation. It’s time for the federal government to recognize that and provide fair, stable, long-term federal funding for BC Ferries.

See you on the road, and remember the message: FAIR FEDERAL FERRY FUNDING!

As I received this news today here in British Columbia, the wildfire smoke blankets the sky, our eyes are burning and our kid is complaining of a sore throat from it. And we’re the lucky ones. Over the weekend, more than 5,000 British Columbians had to flee their homes in 24 hours, under evacuation from just two of the approximately 130 wildfires currently engulfing the province.

What is our government doing? This project defies common sense - this is corporate welfare on a surreal scale, giving a gift to an industry making $90 billion in excess profits this year, and which still refuses to pay for its own infrastructure. It makes a mockery of the duty to consult First Nations, guaranteed under our constitution. You can’t approve a project and then engage in consultation: that is just a pipeline to the courts.

And for Canadians across this land, it is a kick in the teeth to call this climate bomb of a project “in the national interest”. It is in Big Oil’s interest for sure. But it doesn’t do a damn thing for people struggling with the cost of food and housing, increased costs from privatized healthcare, and of course the daily anxiety of climate breakdown.

The rest of the world is racing ahead on renewable energy, leaving Canada behind. Instead of spending at least $50 billion of public money on fueling more climate chaos, Canadians deserve a government that invests in building the green economy of tomorrow – creating good jobs, lowering costs, and protecting our future.
