Mountsberg Raptor Centre

Mountsberg Raptor Centre Do you want to get "nose-to-beak" with the diverse and fascinating world of birds of prey? In many cases, these injuries were caused by human activity.

The Mountsberg Raptor Centre, located within Mountsberg Conservation Area, is an education facility that houses both Ontario native and non-native birds of prey. You could meet owls the size of pop cans or eagles with seven-foot wingspans! Tucked within Mountsberg Conservation Area, the Mountsberg Raptor Centre is currently home to 15 different species of native birds of prey. Many of the Raptor C

entre's resident birds of prey have permanent injuries that have left them incapable of surviving on their own in the wild. With the help of these feathered ambassadors, the Mountsberg Raptor Centre teaches the community about the native birds of prey that share our environment and how to reduce the negative impact we can have on them.

We'd love to know who your favourite is!

Alex was hatched in human care and raised and trained by the staff at the Canadian Peregrine Foundation (CPF). Alex spent many years educating people across Ontario. When the CPF ceased operations, Alex came to live at Mountsberg.

We have surprising news about one of our birds!

Thomas the Broad-winged Hawk arrived at Mountsberg in 2016 at one year of age. Raptor Centre staff typically determine the s*x of a raptor by size, with the female being larger, but Thomas was at a weight and size of either a large male or a small female. We decided on male and chose the name Thomas after Thomas the Tank Engine, as he came to Mountsberg after an accident with a train.

The birds get weighed every day as it is a reliable way to monitor their health. We noticed that Thomas' weight was increasing but didn't think much of it, since birds can sometimes put on a little weight in the spring as they require less food as the temperature warms.

Imagine our surprise when we delivered lunch to Thomas only to discover that he had laid an egg! With this and any future eggs being unfertilized, however, there won’t be any babies but we’re happy for Thomas and glad they feel like the Raptor Centre is the perfect place to start a family! 🫶

One of the skills we like our birds to have is the ability to confidently and comfortably go into a crate. We think Kanuck might be a little TOO comfortable in his crate.

How long does a Harris's Hawk loaf need to bake in the sun before it's ready?
Just kidding! Chip is enjoying the beautiful day in what is sometimes referred to as the "loaf" position.

Unfortunately, we have more sad news to share. It is with heavy hearts that we share the news that Flint the Peregrine Falcon has passed due to age-related complications. Hatched in 2006, at 19 years old Flint was considered a senior bird.
Please feel free to share your memories and photos of Flint with us.

It is with immense sadness that we announce the sudden and unexpected passing of Ayasha the Golden Eagle. After showing normal behaviour throughout the day on Monday March 31, she was discovered in the late afternoon laying on the ground of her enclosure and she passed very quickly after that. Preliminary test results indicate that she suffered a heart attack. Arriving in the summer of 2012 as an adult, we do not know Ayasha's age.

We know that Ayasha was a favourite of many of our guests, and this showed in the voting for Maple Madness. Out of respect for our big golden girl, we have decided to declare her the winner. We know she would have received many votes in the final.

Please feel free to share your memories and photos of Ayasha with us. If you are planning a visit in the near future, please be kind and patient with her caretakers as we mourn this huge, unexpected loss.

If you would like to make a donation to our Adopt-a-Raptor program in honour of Ayasha, you can do so here: https://www.conservationhalton.ca/foundation/adopt-a-raptor/ Donations made through the Adopt-a-Raptor program, help us to ensure that we are providing our birds with the best welfare possible. By symbolically adopting one of our featured raptors, you can help to provide our birds with a wholesome diet, veterinary care, training, enrichment, and more.
