The draft 2025 Village of Canal Flats Annual Report is now available!

Printed copies are also available upon request at the Village Office.
The report highlights projects completed in 2025 and outlines goals and objectives for 2025 and 2026.

In accordance with Section 98 of the Community Charter, residents are invited to share comments on the Annual Report and five-year financial plan.

The report will be considered for adoption at the next Regular Council Meeting on June 22, 2026.

REGIONAL FLOOD & WILDFIRE UPDATE (posted: May 28.26 9:50pm)

A FLOOD WATCH has been issued for the East Kootenay by the BC River Forecast Centre.

The forecast is calling for potential rainfall across the region of 40mm-80mm between Friday and Monday, while the Elk Valley may see 60mm-over 100mm.

The potential for localized flooding impacts has increased substantially heading into the weekend. Those in low-lying or flood prone areas should take steps to protect their home/property.

The public is encouraged to be extremely cautious around all local waterways as sudden, unpredictable changes are possible and creek/riverbanks can be highly unstable.

St. Mary Forest Service Road is closed beyond the 44.1km mark due to a washout. Please avoid this area until further notice as further failures or erosion are possible.

The Ministry of Transportation and Transit will have resources ready to respond if local roads or highways are impacted. For the latest on road conditions: https://www.drivebc.ca

The Regional Emergency Operations Centre has been activated so that resources are ready to act quickly in the event of flooding. The RDEK’s Flood Response Unit is also monitoring conditions and emergency program personnel are connecting with the BC River Forecast Centre and Environment Canada regularly.

🔥REGIONAL FIRE UPDATE:

The BC Wildfire Service is responding to 2 fires in the Bloom Creek area (approx 26km W of Newgate).
o N10435 is an estimated 65ha.
o A 6ha fire nearby is being held and not expected to grow further.

▪ Elk Valley, B.C.

Conditions are favourable for the development of severe thunderstorms that may be capable of producing strong wind gusts and heavy rain. There is a risk of injury.

2026 Property Tax Notices Are Out!

Property tax notices for the Village of Canal Flats have been mailed. If yours hasn’t arrived by June 1, please contact the Village Office at
250-349-5462.

Reminder: Not receiving a notice doesn’t remove your responsibility to pay.

Taxes are due July 2, 2026. A 10% penalty applies to unpaid taxes, including unclaimed Home Owner Grants.

Payments can be made in person (cash, cheque, debit) or through online banking/EFT.

Home Owner Grants must now be claimed directly through the Province of BC: gov.bc.ca/homeownergrant or call 1-888-355-2700

Penalties apply to grants not claimed by July 2, 2026.
