As part of National Indigenous History Month, we are grateful for the opportunity to support community members in attending the Mînî Thnî Powwow, an important cultural gathering and celebration.

Living and gathering in the Bow Valley and beyond is a privilege, and opportunities like this invite us to listen, learn, and engage with respect. Whether you are beginning your learning journey or continuing it, attending a powwow can be a meaningful way to witness and honour Indigenous culture and community.

Stoney Nakoda cultural interpreters will also be present, offering opportunities to learn about Stoney history, traditions, and powwow etiquette.

We are offering free bus transportation from Elevation Place to the Mînî Thnî Recreation Centre. Space is limited, and registration is required.

📅 Friday, June 12
⏰ 10:00 a.m. departure | 2:00 p.m. return

You are also welcome to attend independently. This opportunity is simply intended to help reduce barriers and make participation more accessible.

❗High Streamflow Advisory and Rainfall Event Update (Tuesday, June 2)

The rain is expected to taper off today and end moving into tomorrow. We expect flows to continue in our steep creeks over the coming days, while the snow that has fallen at higher elevations melts. A high streamflow advisory remains in effect for the Bow River and steep creeks. Ground water levels remain high.

This will be our final update for this rainfall event.

⚠️ What You Need to Do:

Stay away from embankments and exercise caution and judgement around the Bow River and all of the steep creeks in the area. Water levels are extremely high, they are moving swiftly, and the water temperature is cold. Do not, under any circumstance, jump into the Bow River or play in water flowing in the steep creeks. You might feel confident in your abilities, but now is not the time to test the strength of mother nature—you risk your own life as well as the lives of first responders. Do not be the reason that other people are put in danger.

Due to the high groundwater levels, use caution while driving and travelling around town.

❗High Streamflow Advisory and Rainfall Event Update (Monday, June 1)

We continue to monitor our steep creeks, the Bow River and streamflow data provided by the Alberta River Forecast Centre. A high streamflow advisory for the Bow River and Steep Creeks remains in effect. Ground water levels are high, we are monitoring known areas and putting up signage where applicable to provide warning to those travelling in the areas.

In some areas of Canmore, water from the Bow River is covering portions of pathways. Town of Canmore crews are closing those areas out of an abundance of caution for public safety.

Weather models show steady precipitation today, easing into tomorrow.

❗High Streamflow Advisory and Rainfall Event Update (Saturday, May 30)

The Town of Canmore’s Incident Management team continues to monitor streamflow data and information provided by the Alberta River Forecast Centre, and we are actively monitoring our steep creeks.

In some areas of Canmore, water from the Bow River has begun to cover portions of pathways. Town of Canmore crews are closing those areas out of an abundance of caution for public safety.
Weather models continue to show varying predictions for rainfall amounts, but we anticipate the heaviest precipitation to begin sometime on Sunday.

The High Streamflow Advisory remains in effect for the Bow River and has now been expanded to include steep creeks in the Canmore area. Significant rainfall is expected this weekend, and stream and creek conditions may change quickly.

The Town of Canmore is actively monitoring conditions and is prepared to respond if needed. Residents and visitors are encouraged to stay well back from riverbanks, steep creeks, embankments, and fast-moving water.

Now is a good time to ensure you are signed up for Voyent Alert, check your sump pump, and prepare for possible heavy rainfall and ponding on roadways.

05/28/2026

⚠️ A high streamflow advisory has been issued for the Bow River (upstream of the Town of Banff to the Ghost Reservoir). Thanks to warming temperatures and snowmelt, water levels are rising on the Bow River, and an additional 30 cm increase is expected through Friday, May 29.

We encourage extreme caution near the Bow River and recommend that people stay off embankments. What may appear as sturdy ground may be undercut by water underneath. If you are near the Bow River with anyone, but especially children and pets, be aware that stream flows like we are experiencing are fast-moving and dangerous; people or pets can be easily pulled into water and downstream.

Watercraft use on the Bow River is NOT recommended at this time.

During high streamflow events, water is moving fast, it is extremely cold, and we also see an increase in debris that poses a significant safety risk. We ask that everyone use caution and judgement around the Bow River. Rescues in these conditions are extremely dangerous for first responders. Don't be the reason others are put at risk.

Please respect closures under the Bow River pedestrian bridge.

Big news for housing in Canmore…the day has finally come!

After years of work, the Livability Tax Program is officially moving forward for 2026 🥳

This program applies a different tax rate to select non-primary residences, encouraging homes to be lived in full-time while generating funding for housing solutions in our community.

While recent legislative changes mean the program applies more narrowly than originally anticipated by exempting properties owned in full or part by individual Albertans, it is still expected to generate approximately $4.4 million in 2026 which is a big win.

This year, the funds will support flood mitigation work to unlock future below market housing development with additional investments in Canmore Community Housing. Future funds are earmarked to support other key initiatives, including $10 million for the YWCA Moustache Lands project over 4 years starting in 2027.

We know housing affordability continues to be a major challenge in Canmore. This is one of the ways we’re taking action.

05/25/2026

We are proud to be building a safer, more direct, and enjoyable transportation network that makes walking, rolling, and riding easier to choose for trips around town. And just like our transportation network has been shifting, so have modes of transportation. To help accommodate different uses, our pathways are designed for people walking to people riding e-bikes, using mobility devices, scooters, and skateboards. 🏃🛴👩‍🦼🛹🚲

While our pathways, trails, and sidewalks encourage different use, many people may not be aware that e-dirt bikes are not permitted on any public roadway, sidewalk, park, or trail. This isn’t just a Canmore thing: it’s part of Alberta’s Traffic Safety Act (RSA 2000 Chapter T-6, s.119(1))

E-dirt bikes, like Sur-Ron and Talaria brand bikes, are increasingly more common and are often confused for e-bikes.

What makes E-dirt bikes illegal for use on streets, pathways, and trails?

🚲 E-bikes must be limited to 32 km/h. Some E-dirt bikes can travel up to 110 km/h.
🚲 E-bikes must not exceed 500W of continuous power with a throttle. E-dirt bikes can output up to 22,000W
🚲 E-bikes must have usable pedals. Most E-dirt bikes do not have pedals
🚲 E-dirt bikes are considered off-highway vehicles (similar to quads)
