During an emergency, waiting for first responders to arrive can feel like an eternity. Clearing the way for emergency vehicles allows a safe and smooth response. You may wonder why the need to come to a complete stop if I’ve already pulled over? Or there is no one else on the road, they can just go around.

- Unpaved shoulders can present a sudden drop off, uneven ground, loose gravel or unexpected ruts. All of these can lead to the potential for another incident.
- Stones and rocks can be thrown from the tires causing unexpected damage to emergency vehicles.
- Emergency vehicles are often bigger and heavier than normal vehicles, and do no turn, pass, or stop like a normal vehicle. The safest path to drive is a clear one.
- Snowy conditions can cause moments of zero visibility for first responders. Clearing the road provides better room for stopping distances.

Making room for emergency vehicles makes for a safer roadway for all.

Move right when you see lights! An ambulance, firetruck or police vehicle are considered emergency vehicles. If one of them is approaching from any direction, you must yield right-of-way. Immediately clear your vehicle from an intersection and allow others to do so as well. Once clear, if you are on an undivided roadway, you need to move your vehicle to the right edge of the road and stop until the emergency vehicles have passed. If you are on a divided roadway, and the emergency vehicle is on the other side, proceed with caution, as the emergency vehicle may have to turn at any moment.
