I hope that everyone is having a wonderful (even though it’s stressful getting our ducks in a row after summer), back to school season.
This is a long one, be prepared haha!
As most of you know, I have a little guy who’s high-needs autistic. We enrolled him in kindergarten this year after holding him back in preschool for an extra year, just because we wanted to make sure that he would be well supported in his school.
I figured it would be important to let you all know what our experience has been with this transition, with all honesty.
He is thriving! We went from 3 days a week to 5 days a week within two weeks. He’s beyond excited to go to school…so much so, that he doesn’t like weekends because it throws off his schedule and he keeps asking for school! That, speaking as a parent, is the best thing my wife and I could ever experience.
My wife thought that homeschooling was the only option for our kiddo, but SD20 and the inclusive education team has changed her mind, and solidified mine.
He is happy, he is seen, he is heard, he is respected, and he has been welcomed into his school without hesitation. We are beyond grateful for the inclusive education team in SD20. The support staff in his school has blown my expectations out of the water. The district team has given us knowledge, safety and genuine care throughout this transition. We know he’s safe, thriving, and happy. That’s all we’ve ever dreamed of.

And to his EA (and his substitute EA), and his teacher…thank you. Thank you so much for giving our boy the best possible environment to learn and grow…we appreciate everything you’re doing.
I have believed in the strengths that our district has, long before I ran for the school board trustee position. Now, I can wholeheartedly say, SD20 Kootenay-Columbia is the best of the best. I’d never trust another district with our child, like I do with all of you.
