It's School Bus Safety Week.

Passing a school bus is illegal. Failing to stop results in 12 demerit points, a three-month license suspension, and fines up to $5000.

If you witness an incident call 9-1-1. Take note of the date, time, vehicle and driver details.

Everyone plays a role in school bus safety!

This week is School Bus Safety Week. Drivers, parents, and students all play a role in school bus safety.

🎒Students should wait in a safe place away from the road and arrive at least five minutes early. They should follow the bus driver’s instructions, make sure the driver can see them, look both ways, and ensure the red lights are flashing before crossing in front of the bus.

🚗Motorists should be aware of school buses and be prepared to stop when amber lights are flashing. When a school bus is stopped with its red-light flashing, drivers must stop at least six metres away and remain stopped until the lights stop flashing.

It’s illegal and dangerous to pass a school bus when red lights are flashing. To protect Island students, drivers who illegally pass a school bus will lose their license and face a fine of up to $5,000.

📲Anyone who witnesses an incident while driving should pull over and call 9-1-1 to report. Note the license plate number, the vehicle and driver description, date and time of day, the location of the incident, and any other details that may assist the police.

Pedestrians have the right-of-way at crosswalks (drivers you must stop!), but it's important to make sure drivers can see you before crossing. Making yourself visible is the first step in pedestrian safety.

Here's some handy tips to remember as the evenings get darker:
➡️Make sure to count to three and look around, even if the light says it is your turn to cross the roadway
➡️Make yourself visible by wearing bright or retro-reflective clothing and carrying a flashlight at night (also, you may want to consider if your pet is visible.)
➡️Use lights and flags (like the photo below) when applicable
➡️On the highways, always walk on the left, facing traffic, so that you can see approaching motorists

Be aware of scams targeting seniors using government programs.

Be cautious of anyone calling or texting you unprompted with offers of cheques or money.

Some signs of a scam are:
❌the person makes an urgent request with a deadline
❌the person requests your personal or confidential information over the phone
❌the communication is unsolicited and includes a claim to be government or bank officials

If you are unsure if a caller is legitimate:

❌do not give your banking information
❌hang up
❌call the government department directly for assistance
