PEI Citizen Advocacy

PEI Citizen Advocacy PEI Citizen Advocacy is a community-based non-profit organization that matches volunteer advocates with Islanders who have intellectual disabilities.

PEI Citizen Advocacy is a community-based non-profit organization that has matched volunteer advocates with intellectually disabled community members for over 30 years. Our goal is to help build long-lasting, freely-given relationships between ordinary citizens (citizen advocates) and people with intellectual disabilities (protégés). Citizen Advocacy helps break down barriers that have often preve

nted people from being able to fully participate in their communities. Advocates provide friendship and support over the long term and make a commitment to represent their protégés rights and interests as if they were their own.

Congratulations to our Executive Director Keyshawn Bonamy for his receipt of the King Charles III Coronation Medal this afternoon. Keyshawn was nominated, amongst 50 others across Canada, by Volunteer Canada for his commitment to the spirit of volunteerism and community building.

Congratulations- Keyshawn will be leaving the VRC with quite the bang! We are so excited to see what he does in the future.

We had the pleasure of speaking to Human Services students at Holland College as part of their Ethics and Legislation course. Our presentation covered the history of Citizen Advocacy and our organization, along with brief overviews of Social Role Valorization and Supported Decision Making.

We would like to thank the students and Eryn Callin for the invitation to present. We’re so pleased to reconnect with Holland College.

PEICA wishes you and yours a merry Christmas and all the best in 2025. Hug your family and friends a little tighter this season; tell them you love them. Mike McAleer would approve of this message.

We are deeply saddened by the loss of our good friend and valued board member, Mike McAleer. Mike is especially mourned by close friends and advocates Ann and Peter Bevan-Baker, Joan McDonald, Twilah Stone and his Grafton House family.

Mike was instrumental in raising awareness of our organization across PEI and a fabulous road trip companion. Always willing to pitch in at every opportunity.

We shall meet again, Mike.
