Charlottetown NDP We are the federal riding for the New Democratic Party of Canada

08/17/2026

We've lost a beloved member of the NDP family. Dick Proctor was an MP, a provincial and federal secretary, and worked with many great New Democrats, from Ed Broadbent and Jack Layton to Roy Romanow and Allan Blakeney.

I’ll always remember him as the funny and lovable sportswriter who was along for the ride on my dad Stephen Lewis’s unforgettable 1975 Ontario campaign. My sister Ilana and I spent countless hours on the bus with Dick, playing word games and having long conversations with a gentle and wise adult who took us seriously.

We are all mourning the loss of an honest and principled New Democrat who infused every role he played with wit, intelligence and sensitivity. We send our love and condolences to Merran and the whole family.

We're hearing the same thing from Canadians from coast to coast: we don't want AI data centres that increase our energy bills, suck up our water, and hurt our communities.

That's why Avi Lewis and the NDP are calling for stronger regulations and a pause on new AI data centres until proper regulations are in place.

Yesterday, we had to say goodbye to one of Prince Edward Island - Epekwitk’s most prominent champions for human rights and social justice, Marie Burge.

Many knew Marie as a staff/founding member of Cooper Institute. That title only scratches the surface of Marie’s activism throughout her life. Her relentless pursuit for a basic income guarantee for all, care for PEI lands, proportional representation in government, issues relating to food sovereignty, immigration and gender equality are just some of the significant social justice issues she championed. Additionally, Marie was a member in both the Latin American Mission Program and in the National Farmers Union. Her dedication to research and education through workshops, speeches, rally/protest appearances and lobbying never once abated, even up to her passing at 88 years of age.

However, accolades and work do not highlight the support and kindness Marie showed to everyone she met. Whether it was interest in how you were, your family, your friends, your community; Marie wanted to talk to you, get to know you, provide support, advice, or kindness. Her unceasing passion and commitment for community to ensure no one is left behind are probably the greatest loss for our Island. Because in these times of struggle, Marie always provided a positive outlook on life and made you feel that you too could change the world for the better.

She will be deeply missed.

Incredibly brazen for the Prime Minister to boast about the “lasting benefits” of expanding fossil fuel production on a day like today.

Record-breaking heatwaves. Toxic smoke engulfing cities and towns. Out of control wildfires forcing entire communities to evacuate.

This government is spending billions of dollars in public money to expand the very industry that’s causing climate breakdown — at a moment when renewables are cheaper and more available than ever before.

No more climate-wrecking corporate welfare. We need a government that protects the people and places we love.
