The International Day of the Girl Child is celebrated and observed on Sunday Oct 11 . A day dedicated to celebrating the voices and power of girls , championing their rights worldwide and reflecting on the challenges they continue to face because of gender. The official theme is to end child marriage and invest in girls rights . Canada led the international effort effort to establish this day to draw attention to the the persistent inequalities and dangers many girls face around the world
Global stats show one in five girls are married annually before the age of 18 globally and over12 million girls are married annually translating roughly one child marriage every 3 seconds. That really made me think back to when l was that age and what my life was like then and what l was doing .

BREAKING: WE DID IT

WE BANNED CHILD MARRIAGE IN CALIFORNIA.

After our epic NINE-YEAR battle, we got the bill passed in California.

When the law takes effect, California will become the 18th state where
we have helped make the marriage age:

18. No exceptions.

It’s a bad day for child rapists — and a HUGELY victorious day for
California girls.

We fought for this. Survivors fought for this. Advocates and allies
across California and the country fought for this.

And today, we won.

National Truth and Reconciliation Day- Sept 30

The design honours the children who never returned home from residential schools, Survivors, their families and communities.

In the centre are three symbols: a feather, a narwhal, and a flower. Each symbol represents the distinct cultures of First Nations, Inuit and Métis communities, brought together in a circular flowing composition to reflect the connection between the groups.

Above the central elements, stars surrounding the moon honour the children who never returned home from residential schools and symbolize their enduring place in our thoughts and memory. The dotted patterns evoke beadwork and reflect the importance of passing down art, culture and traditions from one generation to the next.

Flowing lines connect the elements of the design, reflecting the connections between land, water, communities and generations. Their winding path represents the journey of reconciliation and reminds us that reconciliation is an ongoing process.

The colour orange represents remembrance and the enduring message that every child matters.

💜 A Lasting Symbol of Hope in Our Community 💜

On Friday evening, the Zonta Club of Chatham-Kent was proud to unveil our Purple Bench at Grand West Homeopathy.

This beautiful bench, inscribed with "Zonta Club of Chatham-Kent," is part of the global Purple Bench Project (Barb's Bench), which honours victims of domestic and family violence while raising awareness and encouraging conversations that can help create safer communities.

For more than 75 years, the Zonta Club of Chatham-Kent has been dedicated to building a better world for women and girls. We hope this Purple Bench serves as a visible reminder that no one should face violence alone and that support, hope, and compassion exist within our community.

A heartfelt thank you to our club member Brigitte Davis for generously providing a permanent home for the bench at Grand West Homeopathy, in a highly visible location across from the Chatham-Kent Health Alliance hospital campus. We are also grateful to Fabmaster Welding of Ridgetown for manufacturing and installing the bench with exceptional craftsmanship.

Thank you to everyone who joined us for the unveiling and to all who continue to support our mission of building a safer, more equitable future for women and girls.
