Recently, Cadets from 294 Air participated in the Drumhead Ceremony at the Bothwell Legion on Sunday. A big "Thank-You!" to those cadets for coming out and showing support to the Legion, and to the parents for getting them to the event.
While a few of our cadets were not in uniform as they are brand new to the unit, they still made the effort to arrive, stand at attention and do their best which was noticed by the Bothwell Legion members, who were very thankful for 294's presence. We were also presented with a donation from Bothwell Legion; graciously accepting the donation are Lt Russell, WOI Davidson and WOII Lavrov.
Now you may be asking...What is a Drumhead Ceremony? 🥁
A Drumhead Ceremony is a remembrance service built around an altar made from piled regimental drums, usually draped with national or Legion colours. It symbolizes the improvised worship services held on battlefields when soldiers had no access to a church. Today, Legions use it to pay homage to veterans, dedicate memorial spaces, and mark significant anniversaries.
Why it matters:
It preserves a 1700s battlefield tradition still recognized across Commonwealth militaries. It provides a solemn, symbolic focal point for remembrance when no permanent altar exists. It reinforces the Legion’s mission: ensuring Canada never forgets the sacrifices of those who served.
How it works:
Stacked drums — Bass and snare drums are piled into a three tier altar, just as soldiers did in the 1700s. Flags draped — The Canadian flag and Legion colours are placed over the drums.
Padre or officiant — Leads prayers, reflection, or dedication, echoing the battlefield chaplain’s role.
Music and honours — Last Post, Reveille, lament on pipes, or drum circle elements depending on the community.
Un-piling the drums — The drums are ceremonially removed at the end, symbolizing the closing of the service. 🥁
Again, thank you to the cadets and the parents, as well as Lt H. Russell for supporting the Bothwell Legion. CO V. Eskritt and staff are very proud of you all. 👌🏻
