The Hope RCMP is warning the public about the recent reoccurrence of frauds that commonly target seniors, also known as grandparent scams or emergency scams.

There have been several recent cases in the Hope area where a caller claimed that the victim’s loved one had been in a recent car accident and a pregnant woman had been injured. The caller explained they needed money which could be picked up at the victim’s home, or mailed by courier.

Total calls for service: 46

It was a relatively slow week in Agassiz, allowing officers time to catch up on administrative duties and engage in proactive policing initiatives within the community.

Stranded Boaters
An officer was boating on Harrison Lake when they observed another boat several hundred metres offshore with its occupants waving to attract attention. It turns out the motor had died and efforts to restart the engine were unsuccessful. Wind conditions, which are typical for Harrison Lake, had begun to increase, causing the disabled boat to drift further from shore. The officer assisted by towing the boat back to shore

Impaired Driving
While parked near Highway 9, an officer observed a vehicle committing traffic infractions, and a traffic stop was conducted. During the interaction, the officer noted signs consistent with impairment and an investigation was initiated, resulting in the driver being issued an Immediate Roadside Prohibition. The vehicle was subsequently towed.

Weapons Complaint
Police received a report of a man on Lougheed Highway holding what appeared to be a black handgun. Officers attended immediately and conducted extensive patrols in the area. A man matching the description was located, and it was determined that the object in question was a black lighter designed to resemble a handgun. The individual was warned about the risks of displaying a firearm-like object in public and was sent on their way.
