Four years ago, I was the only person elected to Chilliwack City Council who had never held the office before.

9,153 people put their trust in me. Enough to finish third among everyone running.

I don’t think I fully understood the weight of that at the time. Four years later, I do.

I’ve learned that some of the work that matters most takes much longer than you expect. That good decisions rarely come from having all the answers going in. And that listening, asking better questions, and being willing to change your mind are a much bigger part of this job than most people ever see.

But more than anything, I’ve never forgotten that I got a seat at that table because this community took a chance on me.

9,153 times.

I’m still incredibly grateful for that.

The next few weeks are going to matter. And tonight, I’m just taking a moment to appreciate the four years that brought us here.

Chilliwack is my home. It’s where I was born and raised, raised my family, built relationships, and invested countless hours in the community I love.

I’m Running Again for Chilliwack City Council.

I’m excited to announce that I will once again be running for Chilliwack City Council.

As a lifelong citizen of Chilliwack, serving our community has always been important to me. Over the past four years around the Council table, I’ve gained valuable experience and a deeper understanding of the decisions that shape our community.

I believe in responsible financial stewardship, saving before we spend, maintaining lean operations, keeping property taxes competitive and making sure we take care of the infrastructure we already have.

I also believe a strong community needs a strong economy. Economic development and supporting our local businesses are close to my heart. A healthy business community creates jobs, strengthens our tax base and helps support the programs and services that make Chilliwack a great place to live.

Looking ahead, I want to continue working on affordable housing, public safety, equitable development, accessibility and inclusion, while protecting our agricultural land and being responsible stewards of our environment.

My 12 years of involvement with Chilliwack Healthier Community have given me an even greater understanding of the social challenges facing our community and the importance of working together to support the people who call Chilliwack home.

I love this community. I’m proud of what we’ve accomplished and I believe there is important work still ahead.

I was seven years old when I started working the till in my parents’ store.

Growing up on a dairy farm and in a family business meant everyone had a job. You helped where you were needed, you learned quickly, and you understood pretty early that the money coming into a business had to cover a whole lot of things before it ever became money you could take home.

By 22, I was running a sports retail business. At 25, I started my first company.

For the next 25 years, business was a constant in my life. Different industries, different seasons and plenty of lessons learned the hard way, but all of it here in Chilliwack.

Owning a business teaches you things that are difficult to understand from the outside.

You know what a slow month feels like.

You know what happens when something breaks that absolutely was not in the budget.

And you know what it feels like to make payroll when the numbers are tighter than you would like them to be.

Those experiences don’t leave you.

They’re still in the back of my mind when I’m reading a staff report, looking at a proposed fee increase or thinking about how a decision might actually land for the person running a business on the other side of it.

For the last six and a half years, I’ve also had the opportunity to work with Community Futures South Fraser, helping other entrepreneurs navigate what it takes to start, grow and keep a business going.

At Maple and Williams, there’s a house most people have probably driven past without giving much thought.

But inside, something important has changed.

Sparrow House, run by Ruth & Naomi’s Mission, has expanded their women’s recovery program from 8 beds to 15, creating space for nearly twice as many women to enter a long-term recovery program and stay for a minimum of 12 months.

And that word, house, matters.

At the opening, Scott Gaglardi spoke about the importance of women in recovery knowing there is a place for them, right in the middle of a home. A place to stay long enough to do the difficult work of rebuilding a life, surrounded by support and community.

Ruth & Naomi’s Mission made this happen. Their team saw the need for more space for women in recovery and did the work to create it.

I was grateful to be there for the opening and, mostly, to listen.

Showing up for the smaller openings and quieter moments in our community is a part of this job I really value. They may not always get a lot of attention, but they matter deeply to the people whose lives are changed by them.

Eight beds became fifteen.

Fifteen places for women to be supported in their recovery.

That’s worth noticing.

Chilliwack votes on October 17.

Municipal elections are easy to overlook. Not because people don’t care about what happens in their community, but because we don’t always do a great job of explaining just how much gets decided at the local level.

Your property taxes. How we pay for growth and infrastructure. Funding for local policing and fire services. Which roads are repaved and which intersections need attention. What can be built on the empty lot down the street. Water, sewer and garbage services. The parks, trails and recreation facilities your family uses.

These are the things you notice in your everyday life.

And they aren’t decided in Ottawa or Victoria. They’re decided right here, by the people our community elects to represent Chilliwack.

So, I’m not asking you to vote for anybody.

I’m asking you to vote.

There are three dates worth putting in your calendar:

Advance Voting: October 7
Advance Voting: October 14
General Voting Day: October 17

And if you know someone who usually skips the municipal election, tell them when Chilliwack votes this year.

Local elections matter because the decisions made here show up right outside our front doors.

If you drive through Spadina and Main, you probably know this corner. It was the longtime home of Cheam View United Church. Today, it looks very different.

On July 30, Cedar Láém officially opened its doors, bringing 64 new affordable homes to downtown Chilliwack.

The six-storey building includes one- and two-bedroom homes, five accessible units, and a mix of affordable market rentals, rent-geared-to-income homes, and deeply subsidized homes. That means different levels of affordability for seniors, individuals and families who need them.

This was very much a partnership. Mamele’awt Qweesome Housing Society will operate the housing, Cheam View United Church provided the property through a long-term nominal lease and retains community gathering space on the main floor, and the project was supported by BC Housing, the City of Chilliwack and other community partners.

The City also waived more than $1 million in development charges, along with eligible permit fees, to help make the project possible. In plain language, that means the City chose not to collect certain fees normally associated with development so those dollars could stay in a project delivering affordable housing.

I was glad to be there for the opening and to see a project that has spent years moving through planning, approvals, partnerships and construction finally become a place people can call home.

We talk about housing a lot. We debate it, plan for it and see the numbers in reports.

But this is what those numbers look like when the work is finished: 64 households with somewhere to live in Chilliwack.

There’s something about the smell of the livestock barns mixed with mini donuts, the dust in the air, and the sound of the midway that just feels like August in Chilliwack.

154 years of the Chilliwack Fair. That’s a pretty remarkable run for a community tradition.

It’s one of those weekends where so many different parts of Chilliwack end up in the same place. Farm families who have been coming for generations, families from newer neighbourhoods making their own traditions, kids proudly showing off ribbons, and familiar faces you somehow only ever seem to run into at the Fair.

Growing up on a dairy farm here, a lot of it feels very familiar to me. And I think that’s part of what makes the Fair so special. Chilliwack has changed a lot, but this weekend still feels like Chilliwack.

A huge thank you to the volunteers, organizers, exhibitors, 4-H families, vendors, barn crews, midway workers, and everyone behind the scenes who keeps this tradition going year after year.

Okay, Chilliwack. When you walk through the gates, where did you head first?

I am exited to to work with this amazing team to continue moving this beautiful city forward. Thank you again to every single one of you.
