There are five core principles of Housing First:

1. Immediate access to permanent housing with no housing readiness requirements. Housing First involves providing clients with assistance in finding and obtaining safe, secure and permanent housing as quickly as possible. Key to the Housing First philosophy is that individuals and families are not required to first demonstrate that they are ‘ready’ for housing. Housing is not conditional on sobriety or abstinence. Program participation is also voluntary. This approach runs in contrast to what has been the orthodoxy of ‘treatment first’ approaches whereby people experiencing homeless are placed in emergency services and must address certain personal issues (addictions, mental health) prior to being deemed ‘ready’ for housing (having received access to health care or treatment).

2. Consumer choice and self-determination. Housing First is a rights-based, client-centred approach that emphasizes client choice in terms of housing and supports.

Housing - Clients are able to exercise some choice regarding the location and type of housing they receive (e.g. neighbourhood, congregate setting, scattered site, etc.). Choice may be constrained by local availability and affordability.
Supports – Clients have choices in terms of what services they receive, and when to start using services.
3. Recovery orientation. Housing First practice is not simply focused on meeting basic client needs, but on supporting recovery. A recovery orientation focuses on individual well-being, and ensures that clients have access to a range of supports that enable them to nurture and maintain social, recreational, educational, occupational and vocational activities.

For those with addictions challenges, a recovery orientation also means access to a harm reduction environment. Harm reduction aims to reduce the risks and harmful effects associated with substance use and addictive behaviours for the individual, the community and society as a whole, without requiring abstinence. However, as part of the spectrum of choices that underlies both Housing First and harm reduction, people may desire and choose ‘abstinence only’ housing.

4. Individualized and client-driven supports. A client-driven approach recognizes that individuals are unique, and so are their needs. Once housed, some people will need minimum supports while other people will need supports for the rest of their lives (this could range from case management to assertive community treatment). Individuals should be provided with “a range of treatment and support services that are voluntary, individualized, culturally-appropriate, and portable (e.g. in mental health, substance use, physical health, employment, education)” (Goering et al., 2012:12). Supports may address housing stability, health and mental health needs, and life skills.

Income supports and rent supplements are often an important part of providing client-driven supports. If clients do not have the necessary income to support their housing, their tenancy, health and well-being may be at risk. Rent supplements should ensure that individuals do not pay more than 30% of their income on rent.

It is important to remember that a central philosophy of Housing First is that people have access to the supports they need, if they choose. Access to housing is not conditional upon accepting a particular kind of service.

5. Social and community integration. Part of the Housing First strategy is to help people integrate into their community and this requires socially supportive engagement and the opportunity to participate in meaningful activities. If people are housed and become or remain socially isolated, the stability of their housing may be compromised

So, I’m Gee, Big Red Apple, and my partner in this endeavour is Angela, Junk-Ease Owner. We are two women with a soft spot fo the homeless, specifically “the Vedder Boys.” There are roughly 15-25 women and men, young(ger) and old(der), making the Sardis area their home base. That number has increased quite a bit, even in the short time I have spent out there.
Ang has been an active part of most people’s lives for years. She knows nearly every face and many of their stories. “Adopting” one or two through the years and giving out her couch. She has a huge heart and a small home, yet there is always someone keeping her couch warm. She selflessly gives up her privacy and space, expecting nothing in return for her food and hot water. I can only imagine the feeling of belonging the person on that couch feels.
Knowing that winter is approaching, she has already tasked herself ( and me) to collect socks and coats. After being educated on ‘street feet, ’ I am more motivated than ever to get out there and initiate programs. If you have a moment, google street feet. Ang had her first encounter with the pain-ridden foot last ear. Attached to that foot is someone close to her heart. Regardless, She rolled up her sleeves and did what needed to be done, knowing it was the right and only thing to do, irrespective of the pain she was causing. Her bravery and compassion surpass most people I know.
For two years, Ang has been driving around, passing out lunches, coats, and blankets, leaving those homeless feeling worthy and knowing there’s someone who cares. She gives hope, safety and belonging. After a heartbreaking attempt to get funding for her ‘Vedder Boys,” she still continues to sacrifice her time, heart, and home.

Good evening, so I figured I'd touch base and let you all in on what my partner and I are up to. We'll so far its a bunch of extremely boring paper work and a ton of hrs spent on the computer by my more tolerant friend. If you know me even just a little I much prefer to be out there doing what I love. However we just are not ready. So with that said I'd like to unofficially let you know about our coat and shoe drive coming up. Provided we can get the clearance, let's be honest that is not alway easy... we will set up someplace in Sardis for the day and ask that you join us to bring your new or gently used donations for the men and women that need it in Sardis.
My friend and I will be there and willing to answer some question about what our end game is and to whom your generous donations will be given to. So stay tuned for more info.... JUNK-EAZE

Hey! I’m Gee. I will be working with my friend, Angela. We met a few months ago and quickly realized our goals and passions aligned. We both hold a particular spot for the homeless. Ang spends a lot of her time feeding them, supplying socks and usually, they can hit her up for clean supplies. The Vedder Boys.
I have yet to meet one who doesn’t know and respect Angela. I admire her hard work, and I must admit being a bit jealous. It’s harder for me to get out and spend evenings in the peace of the dark.
That’s ok though because there is a lot of work that I can do from my computer. Follow our journey through the challenges we will face.
We intend to start with getting a Harm Awareness Clinic established in Vedder. We have a location in mind but have yet to begin obtaining it. From there, well, you will have to wait and see.
I will be sharing the journey, podcasting, and with permission, sharing some people storied about how they got to where they are.
