Once it is safe to go back home after a wildfire, there are many things to consider, today's tip: Air Quality and Filters

After the smoke has cleared, ash and fine particles can remain in your home. When cleaning ash or replacing furnace, heat pump and air conditioning filters, consider wearing a well-fitting mask or respirator to help reduce exposure to smoke particles and dust.

Replace filters and clean air intakes after returning home to help improve air quality. A simple filter change can make a big difference for your comfort and health.

Wildfire cleanup can be physically demanding. Wear gloves, sturdy footwear, eye protection and a mask or respirator when needed. Don't forget to take breaks, drink plenty of water and pace yourself! Your health is part of the recovery process.

There are common hazards after a wildfire - here are some to look out for:

⚠️ Hazardous materials
Burned buildings and materials can release toxic substances, including asbestos, propane tanks may be damaged by heat and rodents may have moved in while you were out. It is always a good idea to call a professional to inspect, handle or discard.

⚠️ Dangerous trees and power lines
Fire can weaken a tree even if there are no obvious signs. Do not to remove a burned or damaged tree yourself. Call a qualified danger tree assessor or faller.

If you encounter a downed power line assume it is live, do not approach and call 9-1-1.

⚠️ Wildlife
Spoiled food and food odours can attract bears and other wildlife to a property. Keep a safe distance if you encounter wildlife.

NEWS RELEASE
EVACUATION ORDERS CANCELLED FROM HELLS GATE TO ALEXANDRA BRIDGE

The Fraser Valley Regional District (FVRD) fully rescinded the Evacuation Orders in the area between Hells Gate and the Alexandra Bridge, effective August 27, 2026, at 10 a.m.

The Evacuation Orders, originally issued on July 21, 23 and August 1, 2026, have been cancelled in the following areas in Electoral Area A:

• Properties in Hells Gate; and
• Properties south of Hells Gate to Alexandra Bridge.

The Ministry of Transportation and Transit has announced the following highway update:

• Highway 1 in the Fraser Canyon has fully reopened with single lane alternating traffic for 2 kilometers at Alexandra Tunnel.
• Between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. daily, as BC Hydro crews operate, a pilot vehicle will es**rt traffic through the area and travelers should expect delays of up to 30 minutes.
• Please pay attention to all traffic control.
• The highway could close again on very short or no notice if fire behaviour changes.
• No stopping will be permitted within the active work and wildfire-affected areas of the corridor.
The Brunswick Creek wildfire is still considered out of control however BC Wildfire advises the risk to life and property has sufficiently subsided and residents may return home if they choose to.

First Nations affected by this Evacuation Order cancellation should look to their government for direction.

The FVRD has a re-entry guide for residents with information on what they need to do before they return home and when they return home. Information such as cleaning refrigerators or freezers and how to dispose of spoiled content and what foods are safe to consume can be found in the guide. A print copy will be available for returning residents as they return to their community. A downloadable version is also available on the FVRD website at FVRD.ca/EOC.

Property owners with private wells are reminded that the wells require testing before consuming the water. Well operators should contact Fraser Health for advice.

Residents who are experiencing transportation challenges or other barriers to re-entry can contact the Emergency Operations Centre at 778-704-0400.

KEY POINTS

• The Evacuation Order in the area of Hells Gate and south to Alexandra Bridge has been cancelled.
• Highway 1 between Boston Bar and Alexandra bridge has been reopened with single lane alternating traffic.
• BC Hydro crews are actively working near the Alexandra Tunnel -- travelers should expect delays of up to 30 minutes.
• One Evacuation Order and Alert remains.

TIMELINE
• May 1- August 31: Applications accepted

• September – October: FVRD Finance Department reviews and compiles applications to ensure they meet criteria

• November - January: FVRD Board reviews applications. All approved
applications are included in the draft budget.

• March: FVRD Board approves the draft budget

• April: Cheques are mailed to Regional Grant-in-Aid applicants
