It was a great honor to accept a donation of $3,543.35 last evening to support training for first responders in Critical Incident Stress Management (CISM). These funds will be used specifically to train first responders in the region where the Islanders Riding Club resides.

Duane Antle, the chair of our provincial CISM committee and I had the opportunity to meet with the club, and Dayle’s parents last night to discuss mental health and hear Dayle Penney’s story.

Please see the details below as provided by the Islanders Riding Club. As a reminder, if you or a loved one are experiencing mental health concerns, please do not hesitate to reach out for help.

The Dayle Penney Memorial Ride for Mental Health was created three years ago to honour the memory of Dayle while raising awareness, encouraging conversations, and supporting mental health. Each year, we’re reminded of the incredible impact a community can have when people come together for a cause that touches so many lives. Our hope is to continue keeping the conversation going and letting others know they are seen, heard, and supported.

Sincerely,

Evan Cox

We would like to express our sincere gratitude to the Sydney River Fire Department for the generous donation of a complete set of vehicle extrication tools.

Following a careful review of several deserving applicants, our board selected the Terrenceville Fire Department as the recipient of this equipment. They took possession of the tools during Fire School 2026 in Marystown and have been providing the service ever since.

The Terrenceville Fire Department met all prerequisites as set by our board. These included having members complete NFPA 1006 Vehicle Rescue training(as approved by the Fire Services Division) and ensuring the tools would be equipped to a pumper apparatus for response. Notably, the Terrenceville Fire Department now provides coverage to an area that previously had the longest distance between departments providing vehicle extrication services among all applicants.

Sincerely,

Evan Cox
President

Dear NLAFS Members,

The Great Canadian Fire Census 2026 is now open for your participation. Every department counts as we work to create a snapshot of fire and emergency services in Canada.

The Great Canadian Fire Census is now in its 6th year and continues to inform important national policy, including the firefighter tax credit, the cancer framework, and changes in the codes process, as well as over 300 media citations. You can read about past Census results at the following link. https://458rl1jp.r.us-east-1.awstrack.me/L0/https:%2F%2F458rl1jp.r.us-east-1.awstrack.me%2FL0%2Fhttps:%252F%252Fcafc.ca%252Fgeneral%252Fcustom.asp%253Fpage=Census-Results-2025%2F1%2F0100019f6bde5038-78a3d470-84ba-469d-a709-290999fde6e3-000000%2F7-wnOQ32XTJIokH-x77alXWNvDA=473/1/0100019f70af1801-e0ca44d8-da77-4499-84ac-d712ebdf05cb-000000/W-MbzVhHZCmxhOd9IDpxR2P4mhY=473

You may know that while the Census is a collaboration across the CAFC, the NLAFS will receive the data specific to our province/territory. This means, that when you submit to the Census, you are helping to paint both a national picture, and the picture for our province or territory.

The data in the Census is essential to continue making the case for the key issues impacting the fire sector. Please do everything you can to get your data into the Census. You will find a special webpage with everything you need to know at the following link. https://458rl1jp.r.us-east-1.awstrack.me/L0/https:%2F%2F458rl1jp.r.us-east-1.awstrack.me%2FL0%2Fhttps:%252F%252Fcafc.ca%252Fpage%252FWelcome2026Census%2F2%2F0100019f6bde5038-78a3d470-84ba-469d-a709-290999fde6e3-000000%2F2Zv7b3ol9MD3mjJ7bmaVBNMYfjE=473/1/0100019f70af1801-e0ca44d8-da77-4499-84ac-d712ebdf05cb-000000/aOXwTTSMNHdPy2RHM-PL8tkOWlo=473

The Census asks you to provide data for your organization as it is either on April 30, 2026 or the last available 12 month reporting period. If you are participating for the first time, you will have 135 questions to answer, the majority of which are multiple-choice questions. If you submitted data in previous years, the first part of the survey will ask you to answer new questions, and in the second part, to update your data to returning questions.

You will have until the deadline of August 5, 2026 to provide your answers. We would like one response per department. Estimates are acceptable. If you are unable to answer a question, you can select "I don't know" and move to the next question.

Remember, every fire department counts, literally and figuratively. If you have any questions, or are unable to access the Census due to your department's firewall, please get in touch with CAFC’s Director of Operations and Membership Services, Ms. Anabel Therrien at [email protected]

NL Fire Dept's participation has not been overly high in past years. To try and encourage participation and so you can see who of your peers have completed the 2026 census please comment "Completed" on this post after you have it submitted to the CAFC and let us know what Fire Dept you are representing!
