Even though it's mid-October, fire risk remains very real. This past weekend, Clearwater Fire crews were called out to respond to an unattended campfire along the Clearwater river that had extended into adjacent bush. Despite the fact that the campfire was located in rocks/sand, the campfire caught the underside of a downed cedar tree and extended up to the roots and into the roots of another tree. Fireworks were also found in the campfire. Thanks to a quick response, the fire was contained, but it serves as a strong reminder that campfire safety is a year-round responsibility. Cooler weather does not eliminate the risk of wildfires. Please ensure all campfires are fully extinguished before leaving them unattended. That means doused with water, stirred, and cold to the touch. Let’s work together to keep our community and forests safe.

Over the weekend, the Upper Clearwater Volunteer Fire Brigade had their ground breaking ceremony, for their future hall. A couple of our fire department members attended. It was a well-attended event and it is so amazing to see the hard work and gracious donations that have gone into thie project. So much time, effort, and generosity to get the Brigade they are at. We certainly look forward to seeing their progression and look forward to continued joint training and collaboration. Congrats to all involved.

Cooking related fires are the #1 cause of residential fires in Canada. A stove top grease fire can be scary, but remember this crucial rule: never use water! Pouring water on burning grease is extremely dangerous because the water sinks to the bottom of the pan, instantly turns to steam (1700x expansion), and violently splatters the burning oil, which actually spreads the fire and can cause serious injuries. Instead, your safest bet is to smother the flames by carefully sliding a metal lid over the pan to cut off the oxygen, then turning the burner off. For very small fires, you can use a large amount of baking soda. You may also use an appropriate fire extinguisher -- (class ABC). If the fire is growing or you are unsure about what to do, don't hesitate—get out immediately and call 911!

This demonstration was performed at our annual fire prevention week open house and only a 1/4 cup of water was used for the demo.

Well, it's getting to be that time of year. Halloween is swiftly approaching, which means fireworks! The Clearwater Volunteer Fire Department will be proudly presenting the annual Halloween fireworks display. Each year, we look forward to and appreciate all who come out for the event. We were so grateful for all the donations last year and look forward to putting on a great show this year. There will also be hot chocolate, candy, popcorn and more. So, mark the event in your calendar and we will see you soon!

Cedar hedge demonstration to show the volatility of cedar hedges. These cedar hedges were removed today. Wood and vinyl siding was placed in behind. A gutter was installed with debris placed inside. This evolution occured within a couple minutes and touches on the FireSmart principles of having a non-combustible zone within 1.5m and not having conifer within in 10m if your home. Embers creates by a wildfire can travel quite a distance and land in and around your home.

🚒🔥 Fire Prevention Week at Raft River Elementary! 🔥🚒

This morning, we had the pleasure of visiting Raft River Elementary School to talk with students about fire safety as part of Fire Prevention Week 2025!

This year’s theme is:
"Charge Into Fire Safety: Lithium-Ion Batteries in Your Home" 🔋⚡
We shared the story of how Fire Prevention Week came to be and important tips on how to safely use and store devices powered by lithium-ion batteries — from phones and tablets to e-bikes and toys. These small batteries pack a punch and can be dangerous if not handled properly!

The students were enthusiastic, asked great questions, and even got a close-up look at our gear and fire truck 🚒👨‍🚒. It’s always a highlight to see young minds so engaged and eager to learn how to stay safe. A big thank you to the staff and students at Raft River Elementary for welcoming us today!

And as a reminder, we are holding our annual open house this evening, at the Clearwater Firehall. All are welcome to come and enjoy informative stations and a free BBQ!
