What can Canada and Guatemala learn from each other about healing?

For generations, Indigenous communities have carried knowledge that Western medicine has too often ignored — practices of balance, community, and care rooted in land and ancestry. This month, Horizons of Friendship welcomes our Guatemalan partners PIES de Occidente for a conversation on what it means to decolonize Indigenous health systems.

Join us for Decolonizing Indigenous Health Systems — an evening of dialogue on identity, migration, and ancestral healing across two continents.

Save your seat. We'd love to see you there. https://horizons.ca/decolonizing-indigenous-health-systems/

Today is International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction. We highlight how people and communities around the world are reducing their exposure to disasters and raising awareness of the risks climate change can bring.

Our partner ACUDESBAL in El Salvador promotes natural disaster prevention by educating community members on evacuation techniques, first aid, search and rescue, and more. This project ensures that communities are ready and prepared to face climate-related natural disasters.

We are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Ferlen Valles, a dedicated volunteer at Horizons of Friendship.

For over 11 years, Ferlen was an integral part of the Thrift Store. She gave selflessly her time and effort to support the charity and our team will not be the same without her.

Visitation will be held at MacCoubrey Funeral Home, Cobourg, on Wednesday, October 21, 2026 from 2:00 pm – 4:00 pm and 6:00 pm – 8:00 pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, October 22, 2026 at 1:30 pm. Interment to follow at St. Michael’s Cemetery.

We are keeping her family and friends in our thoughts at this difficult time.
