Here is a look at our weather from June 11th, along with Attawapiskat and Fort Severn along the James Bay and Hudson’s Bay region. Why are we showing you the weather? Well, there is a misconception that polar bears don’t experience summer at all, and that’s not the case.
Here in Cochrane, we sit about 250 kilometers south of the most southern reaching population of polar bears, and the weather we experience here is very similar to what those polar bears are experiencing in the wild.
Polar bears in the James Bay and Southern Hudson Bay region experience complete ice melt in the spring and move inland, spending summer completely on land. Sometimes, experiencing heatwaves alongside us.
To help stay cool during this time of year, polar bears spend a lot of time resting, and swimming in the cold Arctic water. To learn more about what our bears do to stay cool in the summer, check out our blog on our website!
