Here is a look at our weather from June 11th, along with Attawapiskat and Fort Severn along the James Bay and Hudson’s Bay region. Why are we showing you the weather? Well, there is a misconception that polar bears don’t experience summer at all, and that’s not the case.

Here in Cochrane, we sit about 250 kilometers south of the most southern reaching population of polar bears, and the weather we experience here is very similar to what those polar bears are experiencing in the wild.

Polar bears in the James Bay and Southern Hudson Bay region experience complete ice melt in the spring and move inland, spending summer completely on land. Sometimes, experiencing heatwaves alongside us.

To help stay cool during this time of year, polar bears spend a lot of time resting, and swimming in the cold Arctic water. To learn more about what our bears do to stay cool in the summer, check out our blog on our website!

We wanted to show our appreciation for our Co-op and Animal Care Placement Program Students!

The Polar Bear Habitat offers co-op placements for our local high school students during which they assist our Animal Care Staff with daily husbandry tasks, such as food preparation and enrichment making.

Our Animal Care Placement Program is for those who are undergoing or have recently completed education in veterinary or animal care disciplines. This program is suited to post-secondary students looking to fulfill their placement hours or to gain industry specific skills and experience. These students spend a minimum of one month with our Animal Care Team participating in a wide range of husbandry tasks and have the opportunity to observe the veterinary care provided to our bears.

Please note that places are limited and applications are reviewed on an ongoing basis. For more information visit our website at https://www.polarbearhabitat.ca/education

To guests planning a visit tomorrow May 21st, we wanted to inform you that enclosure A’s pool will be closed for its annual spring clean.

While our team gives it a refresh, the bears will still have access to other areas of their habitat—including plenty of space to roam and relax. Cleaning is expected to be completed by end of day Thursday.

Thanks for your understanding as we keep things clean, safe, and polar bear-approved!
