The MD of Bighorn is continuing to monitor the situation

The Bow River, from upstream of the Town of Banff to the Ghost Reservoir, continues to have a High Streamflow Advisory. The MD of Bighorn is monitoring weather conditions and water levels closely. The Emergency Services Team is ready to respond to emergencies.

The rain is expected to taper off today and end moving into tomorrow.

Residents should continue to use caution around waterways, watch for pooling water on roadways, avoid low-lying areas where water may accumulate, and never drive through flooded sections of road. Conditions can change quickly during periods of sustained rainfall.

Please stay back from the riverbank and respect the barricades and taped off areas/ trails. Stay off the river as fast-moving, muddy water is dangerous and conceals submerged logs trees and other debris.

High stream flow advisories are affecting areas along the the upper bow to Ghost Reservoir. Stay in touch through Municipal District of Bighorn and https://rivers.alberta.ca for the latest updates.

ADVISORY: Bow River High Streamflow Advisory

A high streamflow advisory has been issued for the Bow River (upstream of the Town of Banff to the Ghost Reservoir). Due to warming temperatures and snowmelt, water levels are rising on the Bow River, and an additional 30cm increase is expected through Friday, May 29.

Stay away from all flooded areas. Muddy water prevents visibility and can hide open sewers, sinkholes, and dangerous debris. Fast-moving water and submerged debris are dangerous. Stay off the river.

Riverbanks will be slippery. Keep back from the water’s edge, especially children and pets.

During high streamflow events, water is moving fast, it is extremely cold, and we also see an increase in debris that poses a significant safety risk. We ask that everyone use caution and judgement around the Bow River. Rescues in these conditions are extremely dangerous for first responders. Don't be the reason others are put at risk.

Groundwater Readings in Exshaw will now occur daily, starting Thursday, May 28. To see groundwater levels, please check here: https://www.mdbighorn.ca/656/Groundwater-Readings

FYI to Residents and Visitors

With warming temperatures, ice conditions can change quickly and may not be safe, posing a risk to you and first responders. Use caution around all lakes, ponds, and rivers.

For your safety:
- Stay off lakes, rivers, and ponds
- Keep kids and pets close and away from shorelines and open water
- Avoid areas with moving water, inlets/outlets, cracks, pressure ridges, or slushy/grey ice

If someone breaks through the ice: Call 911 immediately. Do not attempt a rescue from the ice. Use a rope, extension cord, or long branch from the shore.
